Objective: identifying conditions of individual vulnerability in older adults and investigating the relationship with health indicators through a household survey. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted with 368 older adults attended by the Family Health Strategy. Data collection was performed through a structured interview, supported by instruments that include sociodemographic characterization, health indicators and the Vulnerable Elders Survey. A descriptive data analysis and Person's chi-square test were also performed. Results: a prevalence of 52.2% individual vulnerability was found among older adults, in addition to an association with health problems, negative self-perception of health, difficulty with mobility and in performing activities of daily living. Conclusion: identifying vulnerability among the aged population is a relevant initiative for the adequacy of health policies and programs that prioritize the promotion of aging with the maintenance of functional capacity.

Objective: To analyze the police reports fi led by older adults who suffered abuse in order to identify the socio-demographic characteristics of victims and aggressors, type of violence, location, as well as to compare rates in three Brazilian cities in the period from 2009 to 2013. Method: Ecological study, in which 2,612 police reports registered in Police Stations were analyzed. An instrument was used to obtain data from the victim, the aggressor and the type of violence. Results: Psychological abuse predominated and most cases occurred in the older adults own home. In the cities of Ribeirão Preto and João Pessoa, the older adults presented similar rates for both gender. Regarding the standardized rates, in João Pessoa, there was a rise of this type of abuse in the two fi rst years, and later there was a certain stability. In the city of Teresina, there was an increase, also observed in the city of Ribeirão Preto in the three fi rst years, followed by a decrease. Conclusion: Older adults abuse is a cultural phenomenon diffi cult to be reported by them, since it occurs in the family context. RESUMO Objetivo: Analisar os boletins de ocorrência registrados por idosos que sofreram violência, a fi m de identifi car características sociodemográfi cas das vítimas e dos agressores, tipo de violência, local, bem como comparar as taxas em três municípios brasileiros no período de 2009 a 2013. Método: Estudo ecológico, em que foram analisados 2.612 boletins de ocorrência registrados em Delegacias do Idoso. Utilizou-se um instrumento para obter dados da vítima, do agressor e tipo de violência. Resultados: Predominou a violência psicológica, na maioria dos casos na própria residência do idoso. Em Ribeirão Preto e João Pessoa, os idosos mais jovens apresentaram taxas semelhantes entre ambos os sexos. Na comparação das taxas padronizadas, em João Pessoa, houve ascensão deste tipo de violência nos dois primeiros anos, e, posteriormente, certa estabilidade. Em Teresina, houve ascensão, também observada em Ribeirão Preto nos três primeiros anos, seguida de decréscimo. Objective to compare the frailty syndrome among elderly people living at home in two Brazilian cities and to identify factors related to sociodemographic and health-related variables.Method population-based cross-sectional study with 480 elderly individuals from the cities of Ribeirão Preto/SP and João Pessoa/PB, with application of the Mini Mental State Examination instruments and the Edmonton Frailty, Geriatric Depression and Lawton and Brody scales. Descriptive analysis, Chi-square test, Fisher’s test, Student’s t-test, Spermann’s correlation and Logistic regression were used. In all analyzes, the level of significance was set at p≤0.05.Results in relation to frailty, it was verified that living in Ribeirão Preto, presenting advanced age, low schooling, multiple chronic diseases, reduced cognitive status and functional capacity, besides depressive symptoms, are factors associated with the frailty syndrome, in both cities.Conclusion we identified that the frailty syndrome in the elderly of both cities has a relation with the place where the elderly person lives, age, schooling, number of diseases, reduction of cognitive status, functional capacity and presence of symptoms depressive.

This study analyses the multiple abuse against older adults reported to the elder abuse police units of three Brazilian cities from 2009 to 2013. This is a longitudinal and retrospective study carried out through the analysis of police reports (PRs) in the elder abuse police units of three Brazilian cities: Ribeirão Preto (SP), Teresina (PI), and João Pessoa (PB). Descriptive statistical analysis consisted of absolute and percentage frequencies. The chi-square test, Fisher’s Exact test, and Relative Risk (RR) were used to analyze the data, with a 95% Confidence Interval (CI) and a significance of 5%. A total of 2,313 reports of older adult abuse were analyzed, of which 245 (10.6%) were related to reports of multiple abuse, 49.4% in Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, 22.9% in João Pessoa, Paraíba, and 27.8% in Teresina, Piauí. Most of the victims of recurrent older adult abuse are female and younger elderly. Psychological abuse was the most recurrent, followed by financial abuse, occurring in the victim’s own home. In João Pessoa, older women and elderly living with their abusers were at a higher risk of report of multiple abuse acts. In Ribeirão Preto, living with the aggressor was a risk factor for multiple violent acts. In the total population of the study, living without companion and not living with the aggressor were identified as protective factors against recurrent violence. The need to implement social and legal actions to improve safety for the more vulnerable groups is emphasized.

Resumo OBJETIVO Avaliar a qualidade de vida entre idosos que trabalham e não trabalham. MÉTODO Trata-se de um estudo descritivo, de corte transversal e abordagem quantitativa com 113 idosos, no período de junho a setembro de 2014, em um grupo de convivência no município de Cajazeiras - PB, utilizando-se os questionários sociodemográficos, o WHOQOL-BREF e WHOQOL-OLD. Os dados foram analisados mediante estatística descritiva e testes T de Student e Mann-Whitney. RESULTADOS A partir da análise observou-se que os idosos que trabalham apresentaram maiores escores médios na maioria dos domínios do WHOQOL-BREF e facetas do WHOQOL-OLD, evidenciando-se o domínio Psicológico (70,0) e a faceta Habilidades Sensoriais (72,5). O domínio físico apresentou diferença estatisticamente significante (p=0,046) entre os dois grupos. CONCLUSÃO O estudo demonstrou que o trabalho é um fator importante para a qualidade de vida do idoso.

Resumo OBJETIVO Avaliar o risco de quedas de pessoas idosas hospitalizadas. MÉTODO Estudo transversal e abordagem quantitativa, realizado em Hospital Universitário do Estado da Paraíba. A amostra configurou-se em 284 idosos entrevistados de abril e outubro de 2016. Utilizou-se a Escala de Morse para avaliar o risco de quedas. RESULTADOS Prevaleceram idosos do sexo masculino (52,5%), com 60 a 69 anos (58,1%) e não alfabetizados (38,7%). Verificou-se que 45% da amostra apresentou alto risco de quedas. Diagnóstico secundário e uso de terapia intravenosa foram os critérios que obtiveram um maior percentual de idosos em risco. Os diuréticos (p≤0,032), a incontinência urinária (p≤0,001), deficit visual (p≤0,001) e a insuficiência cardíaca (p≤0,001) apresentaram associação significativa com o alto risco de quedas. CONCLUSÃO Utilizar ferramentas específicas na prevenção de quedas possibilita melhora na qualidade assistencial baseada em evidências científicas, permitindo intervir de forma eficaz e potencializar a segurança do paciente.

The increase in life expectancy and the percentage increase in the older population are related to the reduction in quality of life and social life due to the biopsychosocial changes inherent to the aging process. The present study aimed to verify scientific evidence on the relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms among older adults. An integrative review was carried out using the following databases: SCOPUS, PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, CINAHL and PyscINFO, applying the descriptors indexed in the Mesh Terms and DeCS “aged”, “loneliness”, “depression”. The PICOS strategy was used to prepare the title and guiding question and the PRISMA methodological guidelines were used to write the report of this review. A total of 827 articles were identified, of which 23 were selected, 16 from the database and seven through a reverse search. Loneliness and depression have some characteristics in common, so that when one of these conditions develops in older adults, another is stimulated. Thus, loneliness is a major risk factor for the development of depression, just as depression is an aggravating factor for loneliness in older adults.
