ABSTRACT:In recent decades, it has been observed an increase in scientific production on frailty in the elderly. Nevertheless, there is no consensus on the definition and use of that concept. Thus, in view of the need to clarify it, the objective of this study was to analyze the concept frailty in elderly people, identifying antecedents, attributes and consequences of the phenomenon. The study was guided by the conceptual model of analysis proposed by Walker and Avant, being performed by the examination of 31 papers relevant to the subject, published in Portuguese, English and Spanish from 2001 to 2009. The results confirmed that frailty in the elderly is a multidimensional and multifactorial event, characterized by the vulnerability to the biopsychosocial and environmental stressors along with changes in the muscle-skeletal system, in the motor function, body composition and resulting in functional impairments and their outcomes. DESCRIPTORS:Frail elderly. Elderly. Aging.
Objective: identifying conditions of individual vulnerability in older adults and investigating the relationship with health indicators through a household survey. Method: a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted with 368 older adults attended by the Family Health Strategy. Data collection was performed through a structured interview, supported by instruments that include sociodemographic characterization, health indicators and the Vulnerable Elders Survey. A descriptive data analysis and Person's chi-square test were also performed. Results: a prevalence of 52.2% individual vulnerability was found among older adults, in addition to an association with health problems, negative self-perception of health, difficulty with mobility and in performing activities of daily living. Conclusion: identifying vulnerability among the aged population is a relevant initiative for the adequacy of health policies and programs that prioritize the promotion of aging with the maintenance of functional capacity.
Concepts are terms referring to phenomena that occur in nature or in thought, which are essential in developing research, as well as in the construction of theories. To fulfill this role in the construction of scientific knowledge, it is appropriate for them to be reviewed periodically, aiming mainly at its improvement. Despite the existence of different models of conceptual analysis, this methodology, in general, has not been well understood by nursing, especially in our reality. Therefore, in this article, of reflection, we describe some methodological considerations, including a practical approach on the methods proposed by Walker and Avant, Rodgers and Schwartz-Barcott and Kim, in order to give nurses greater understanding of this process.

Objective: conducting a survey about delirium in the elderly in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Method: an integrative review of the literature held in databases MEDLINE and IBECS, in May 2012, whose inclusion criteria were: to be published between May 2007 to May 2012, available in full and in Portuguese, English and Spanish. Results: there were found 68 productions and selected 16, which were categorized into: 1) Incidence and prevalence of delirium in the elderly in ICU; 2) Factors predisposing and precipitating risk of delirium in the elderly in ICU and 3) Strategies for preventing modifiable risk factors of delirium in the elderly patients in the ICU. Conclusion: the scientific production about delirium is incipient in Brazil, health professionals, especially nurses, need to improving the recognition of this syndrome and implementing strategies for risk prevention factors for delirium
