However only animals on thermal comfort with pair feeding showed a decreasing protein deposition. The animals on heat stress showed lower fasting and carcass weights than those animals on thermal comfort with ad libitum feeding. The animals on heat stress showed fasting and carcass weights higher than those with pair feeding. The treatments did not affect carcass yield and relative weights of the evaluated organs, exception for stomach, that was smaller in T3. The physiological parameters (surface temperature and respiratory rate) were negatively affected by high temperature (T1). Rectal temperature was not influenced by the treatments. It was concluded that in the growing phase high temperature decreased pig performance and maintained a protein deposition in carcass, and this effect is not limitant to decrease feed intake.
Palavras-chave: ambiente térmico, carcaça, crescimento, leitões, parâmetros fisiológicos Effect of Thermal Environment on Performance of Growing Pigs from 15 to 30 kgABSTRACT -This trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of the environmental temperature on performance, carcass composition and physiological parameters of swine from 15 to 30 kg. Thirty-six barrow (Landrace x Large White) averaging initial weight of 14.97 + 0.56 kg were assigned to a completely randomized experimental design with three treatments and six replicates of two animals. The experimental period lasted 23 days. The treatments were as follows: T1 -animals on heat stress (35ºC) fed ad libitum; T2 -animals on thermal comfort (22ºC) fed ad libitum; T3 -animals on thermal comfort (22ºC), pair feeding with treatment 1. Decreasing effects of treatments 1 and 3 feed intake, weight gain, carcass yield and decrease on feed:gain ratio were observed. It was also observed decrease on daily protein and fat depositions in carcass of the animals of treatments 1 and 3 compared of those in the treatment 2. No effects of treatments on relative weights of evaluated organs were observed, except for the relative weight of kidney and stomach that were smaller in the animals of treatment 1 than those of treatment 2. The physiological parameters (rectal temperature, surface temperature and respiratory rate) were negatively influenced by high temperature (treatmen...
Enteric viruses cause avian diseases that result in economic losses. Avian Rotavirus (AvRV) is the most important virus associated with enteritis in poultry. The main goals of this study were to determine the prevalence of AvRV using molecular tests in broiler chickens (Gallus gallus) from the metropolitan mesoregion of Belém (Pará State, Brazil), to provide epidemiological information, and to compare the rotaviruses detected in this study with reference to strains by phylogenetic analysis. Pooled fecal samples were collected from 37 poultry farms. The samples were tested for the NSP4 gene using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In total, 35 (41.2%) of the 85 fecal samples were positive for NSP4. There were 19 (51.4%) farms with at least one poultry house positive for AvRV. Considering the distribution of positive samples by age, the chicks aged 31-45 days comprised 18 (51.4%) of the 35 rotavirus-positive samples. Analyzing the data by density population, the houses with more than 9 birds/m 2 had 25 (86.2%) positive samples, showing that higher infection rates occurred in higher density houses. To confirm the RT-PCR results and perform phylogenetic analysis, 20 positive samples were selected for sequencing. The rotaviruses detected in our study were clustered in a single group and had 93.5 to 100% sequence identity at the nucleotide level. The most affected age group included broiler chickens older than 15 days. Climatic conditions and high population densities favored the spread of AvRV and supported its uniform maintenance between seasons.
The effects of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) on growth performance, carcass yield, relative weight of internal organs and microbiology of digestive tract of broiler chickens were investigated. Five hundred and forty male broiler chicks at one day of age were arranged in a completely randomized design with six treatments and six repetitions with 15 broiler chicks each. The treatments were: control (T1 -without growth promoter virginiamycin and CNSL); inclusion levels of 0.10mL (T2), 0.20mL (T3), 0.30mL (T4) and 0.40mL (T5) of CNSL/kg of feed; and commercial promoter virginiamycin (T6). At 21 and 40 days of age, body weight, feed intake, feed conversion and viability of birds were similar in all treatments. Carcass yield was higher in the treatment with the growth promoter when compared to the control treatment. There was a linear increase in carcass yield when the level of CNSL was increased in the diet. The relative weight of the intestine was lower in the treatment containing virginiamycin when compared to the treatment without the inclusion of additives. The relative weight of the intestines decreased when the levels of inclusion of CNSL were increased. There was a gradual reduction of Escherichia coli concentration reaching the lowest number on the CNSL level of 0.30mL/kg. It was concluded that CNSL showed similar performance and slaughter yield as the growth promoter and reduced the concentration of Escherichia coli in the intestinal contents.
