A orillas del lago Nahuel Huapi, los jesuitas de la Araucanía fundaron una misión como prolongación de las misiones chilotas para ganar tierras y súbditos al otro lado de la cordillera. Lo hicieron en dos etapas: 1670-1674 y 1703 -1717. Presentaremos en este trabajo dos cuestiones significativas que se proyectan en tensión hacia el presente: el martirio de los jesuitas del Nahuel Huapi y la devoción de la Virgen María. El martirio del P. Mascardi transformó en mártires a sus sucesores de acuerdo a las actuales narrativas contradiciendo a las fuentes. La Misión bajo la advocación de la Virgen resultó clave en relación a su patronazgo, sus títulos y su iconografía. La supervivencia de su imagen en el incendio que destruyó la misión y su “supuesto hallazgo” en la actualidad, la convirtieron en un emblema de “cristiandad colonial” regada con la “sangre del martirio”, que remite al pasado jesuita colonial.
El proceso de evangelización católica se ha desarrollado en medio de una compleja situación de conquista y de violencia real y simbólica, con el fin de controlar, disciplinar e introducir una nueva cultura, por medio de la prédica de la doctrina y la comunicación de una fe; y, para este fin, la opción por el uso de la lengua dominante o la vernácula constituyó una cuestión central. Entre los misioneros más destacados del período de conquista de la Patagonia (1879-1884), encontramos al salesiano Domingo Milanesio, que utilizó el mapuzungun (lengua mapuche) en la prédica oral y en la publicación de materiales escritos. El análisis de su práctica no sólo nos permite analizar la relación entre los misioneros y los indígenas en el escenario posconquista, sino, además, el uso de esta lengua, su circulación en ese período y las cadenas intertextuales con las producciones de los misioneros precedentes (lazaristas y franciscanos), resignificadas posteriormente por los salesianos.
El proceso de extinción de los selk’nam generó una polémica dentro de la congregación de los salesianos alrededor de las causas que suscitaron su desaparición. Por medio de la reducción «Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria» llevada a cabo por monseñor Fagnano en 1893, se puso en marcha un plan de evangelización y «civilización» de los selk’nam. Estos aborígenes buscaban refugio en la reducción ante la persecución y asesinato perpetrados por los estancieros fueguinos. Las acechanzas, el contagio de enfermedades a las que los aborígenes no eran inmunes y el impacto cultural que provocó el sistema de reducciones, contribuyeron a su extinción. Los misioneros salesianos, protagonistas del proceso reduccional, analizaron las causas de la extinción poniendo el acento fundamentalmente en las matanzas de los estancieros y la violencia aplicada por las autoridades estatales, aun admitiendo las ocasionadas por el cambio cultural. La siguiente generación de salesianos, desde el estudio de las fuentes y la construcción de su propia historia, desplazó la causa violenta hacia motivos fisiológicos y culturales, con el fin de no poner en tela de juicio el rol que las familias de estancieros Braun Menéndez y Menéndez Behety, colaboradoras con la obra salesiana, tuvieron en este nefasto proceso.
