This study aimed to assess the yield loss caused by capybaras in rural areas of Dourados-MS, their feeding periods, crop preferences and the landscape characteristics of farms that may affect the occurrence of capybara's herds. Semi-structured interviews in 24 different farms were done during a period between April 2010 and August 2011. Field observations were held at different times of the day, and also during the night in order to record peaks of the feeding behavior in six farms. Direct counting of capybaras along with the group of animals reported as seen by the farmers during the interviews was used to estimate the size of herds. Data was analyzed using the Principal Components Analyses and the Analytic Hierarchy Process. The average number of capybaras found in a regular herd was 18.8 ± 7.90 animals. The average number of capybara herd by farms was of 1.38 ± 0.92 while the average number of capybaras by farms was 32.33 ± 27.87. Capybaras selected rice (Oryza sativa) when it was available (14.5% of devastation in 1.18% of total planted area); however, the most eaten crop was corn (Zea mays) with 38.55% of loss rate in 16.17% of the total planted area. Capybaras ate mostly in the evening and during the night. The availability of water resources in the rural area predisposed the occurrence of capybara's herds.
This study evaluated the efficacy of training of catching teams and reduction of back scratches in broilers. The study was carried out in a large broiler company between January and October of 2010, in the region of Dourados, Brazil. During that period, 80 samplings were performed in 80 broiler houses in the micro-regions covered by the company. When broilers were 43 days old, when 5% of the birds in each house were evaluated immediately after catching, when birds were already inside the plastic crates, ready to be transported to the processing plant. Out of a total number of 1,177,600 total, 58,880 broilers were evaluated. Four catching teams (A, B, C, and D), with 24 people each, were trained for four consecutive weeks. By the end of the training course, it was observed that average age of the team members and time of catching affected the incidence of back scratches. Training had a positive effect, reducing in 33.13% the incidence if back scratches caused by the catching team due to incorrect catching procedures. Therefore, continuous training is required, particularly when the catching teams are composed of young and inexperienced workers.
Carcass quality is one of the main parameters to evaluate broiler welfare, and the presence of back scratches indicates that the birds were submitted to stress. The objective of this study was to identify the best management practices during rearing and catching, taking into consideration broiler genetic differences (genetic lines A and B) and sexes. The survey was carried out in 351 broiler houses belonging to an integrated company and located in the region of Dourados, MS, Brazil. Between January and October, 2010, 2% of broilers of all ages (one to 43 days old) in all flocks were sampled. The sampled flock was evaluated in 21 d intervals. Scratches were classified as present or absent. The results indicated that catching management has the strongest influence on back scratches (73%), followed by rearing management (17%) and equipment management (10%). In general, strain A females presented the lowest probability of presenting scratches after weighing, equipment management, and catching. It was concluded that, although rearing and equipment management practices affected the presence of scratches, catching caused the highest percentage of lesions in birds of both strains, and therefore, it is considered critical. Broilers from distinct that genetic strains reacted differently to management practices due to their temperament and growth rate. Therefore, broilers should be housed according to genetic strain due to their different temperaments.
This study aimed at evaluating the influence of genetic strain, sex, and season on the incidence of back scratches during the rearing period. Male and female broilers of two genetic strains reared during the hot or cold season were evaluated. This meta-analysis included 894 samplings in 351 broiler houses of contracted farms located in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, in 2010. Broilers of all ages (1 to 43 days) were sampled, capturing 2% of the birds in the house at each sampling. Each flock was evaluated twice, in 21-day intervals. Broilers were reared as single-sex flocks; there were no straight-run flocks. Scratch lesions were classified as present or absent. Strain A broilers presented lower scratch rates (p < 0.05) than strain B birds. During the starter period (1 a 21 days), males presented higher scratch rates (p < 0.05) than females, and the incidence of these lesions was lower during the hot season compared with the cold season. It was concluded that different management practices can be adopted to minimize back scratches in broilers of different sexes and strains during hot and cold seasons, such as reducing weight control frequency and the period of chick containment in brooder circles
The present study aimed to evaluate the use of organic and inorganic minerals in Cobb500 broiler breeder diet and its effects on the performance. The birds were housed in an experimental house at Poultry Laboratory of the Federal University of Santa Maria with 20 fl oor pens of 4.61m2 each. The experiment was conducted between 51st and 65 th weeks of age of birds. The design was completely randomized with four treatments and fi ve pen replicates with 22 hens and 2 roosters each. The treatments evaluated were: PI=100% mineral inorganic premix; PO= 100% mineral organic premix: PI+PO= 70% mineral inorganic premix + 30% mineral organic premix and PI+Zn= 100% mineral inorganic premix, except zinc mineral, that was 70% inorganic form and 30% organic form. The following parameters of performance and egg quality were evaluated: laying rate, body weight, egg, albumen and yolk weight, yolk color and specifi c gravity of eggs. These parameters were performed one day per week throughout the experimental period to evaluated egg quality. Under the conditions and time that the experiment was conducted, the use of organic minerals had no signifi cant effect on the performance and egg quality parameters evaluated in the broiler breeders.
O objetivo deste experimento foi avaliar o efeito do nível de cálcio na dieta sobre o peso corporal e as variáveis reprodutivas (volume de sêmen, número de células espermáticas e fertilidade) em reprodutores de corte machos com ou sem crista. Foram utilizados 32 machos Cobb 500, 50% com crista inteira e 50% sem crista. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com esquema fatorial 2x2, duas condições de crista (com e sem) e dois níveis de cálcio (0,90 e 1,35%). O sêmen foi coletado pelo método americano, e o número de células espermáticas foi determinado em câmara de Neubauer. Na 42ª, na 43ª e na 44ª semana de idade dos machos, 48 fêmeas para cada tratamento foram inseminadas artificialmente. As inseminações foram realizadas duas vezes por semana, com sêmen fresco, na dose de 0,05mL. Depois de 21 dias de incubação, os ovos não eclodidos foram quebrados e examinados macroscopicamente para análise da fertilidade. Os machos alimentados com 0,90 e 1,35% de cálcio nas dietas tiveram pesos similares. Além disso, na 31ª semana de idade, machos com crista que receberam dietas com 0,90% de cálcio apresentaram maior número de células espermáticas (3,00x10(6) 0,90% com crista contra 9,46x10(5) 0,90% sem crista). O nível de cálcio de 0,90% foi suficiente para promover um bom desempenho reprodutivo em reprodutores de corte machos. Machos com crista inteira tiveram melhor fertilidade que os demais machos sem crista.
