Ariid monophyly and intrafamilial relationships are investigated based on cladistic analysis of 230 morphological characters. Terminal taxa examined include whenever possible type‐species, or the most morphologically similar species to the type‐species of the nominal genera, and the largest possible number of species, including cleared and stained specimens, available in zoological collections. Previous hypotheses about monophyly of the Ariidae are strongly corroborated by new synapomorphies discovered in the present study. The subfamily Galeichthyinae and the remaining ariids are strongly supported by new morphological characters. The monotypic subfamily Bagreinae is recognized as the sister group to all nongaleichthyin ariids, supported by a large series of exclusive synapomorphies. A new concept of Ariinae is presented: the subfamily is found to be unequivocally monophyletic and includes all ariid genera, except Galeichthys and Bagre. New data supporting the monophyly of the genera included in the Ariinae are introduced and previous hypotheses of monophyly, species composition, morphological definition, and relationships are reviewed and discussed.

A new Corydoras species from the rio Tiquié, upper rio Negro system, Amazonas, Brazil, is described. This taxon was previously referred to as "Corydoras species 'Asher'", "Corydoras cf. reynoldsi", and "Corydoras aff. reynoldsi" in the aquarist literature. The new taxon can be distinguished from all its congeners, except Corydoras reynoldsi and C. weitzmani, by its color pattern, consisting of three large, dark blotches, the first one ("mask") on the head, across the eye; the second one on the trunk at the level of dorsal fin; and the third one on the trunk at the level of the adipose fin. It can be distinguished from Corydoras reynoldsi mainly by the development of trunk blotches; and from C. weitzmani by the presence of a dusky saddle between the dorsal and adipose fins, the second trunk blotch extending vertically from the adipose-fin base to the anal-fin base, and the presence of four dark stripes in the caudal fin.Uma nova espécie de Corydoras do rio Tiquié, bacia do alto rio Negro, estado do Amazonas, Brasil, é descrita. Este táxon foi anteriormente citado na literatura aquarista como "Corydoras species 'Asher'", "Corydoras cf. reynoldsi" e "Corydoras aff. reynoldsi". O novo táxon pode ser distinguido de todos seus congêneres, exceto Corydoras reynoldsi e C. weitzmani, por seu padrão de colorido, que consiste em três grandes manchas pretas, a primeira ("máscara") na cabeça, através do olho; a segunda no tronco, no nível da nadadeira dorsal; e a terceira no tronco, no nível da nadadeira adiposa. Ele pode ser distinguido de Corydoras reynoldsi principalmente pelo desenvolvimento das manchas do tronco, e de C. weitzmani pela presença de uma mancha escura na porção dorsal das placas dorsolaterais, entre a nadadeira dorsal e a nadadeira adiposa, pela segunda mancha estender-se verticalmente da base da nadadeira adiposa até a base da nadadeira anal, e pela presença de quatro listras pretas na nadadeira caudal.

Based on comprehensive distributional records of the 23 species currently assigned to the lizard genus Tropidurus, we investigated patterns of endemism and area relationships in South America. Two biogeographic methods were applied, Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) and Brooks Parsimony Analysis (BPA). Two areas of endemism were detected by PAE: the first within the domains of the semiarid Brazilian Caatinga, which includes seven endemic species, and the second in the region of the Serranía de Huanchaca, eastern Bolivia, in which three endemic species are present. The area cladograms recovered a close relationship between the Atlantic Forest and areas of the South American open corridor. The results revealed a close relationship among the provinces Caatinga (Cerrado, Parana Forest (Pantanal+Chaco)). The uplift of the Brazilian Central Plateau in the Late Pliocene-Early Pleistocene (4-2 Myr BP) has been interpreted as a major event responsible for isolation and differentiation of biotas along these areas. However, we emphasize that without the establishment of a temporal framework concerning the diversification history of Tropidurus it is premature to correlate cladogenetic events with specific time periods or putative vicariant scenarios. The limiting factors hampering the understanding of the biogeographic history of this genus include (1) the absence of temporal references in relation to the diversification of distinct clades within Tropidurus; (2) the lack of an appropriate taxonomic resolution of the species complexes currently represented by widely distributed forms; and (3) the need for a comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis. We suggest that these three important aspects should be prioritized in future investigations.

Aim:We present an update on the composition of the fish species of the Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park and the Imboassica Lagoon, in the northern portion of Rio de Janeiro State, based on collecting efforts of almost two decades, historical museum records, and a review of the literature. Methods: Specimens were collected using a variety of techniques, mostly between 1994 and 2012, and were fixed with the use of a 10% solution of formalin and subsequently stored in 70% alcohol solution.

A new species of Corydoras from the Rio Urucu basin, a right-bank tributary of the Rio Solimões is described. The new species shares a distinctive pigmentation pattern with Corydoras arcuatus, C. gracilis, and C. narcissus, composed of a uniform light ground color on the body, and a dark, arched stripe from tip of snout to caudal-fin base along the upper portion of the dorsolateral body plates. The new species is readily distinguished from these congeners by the absence of a continuation of the arc-like stripe onto the snout. It also differs from Corydoras gracilis and C. narcissus by the posterior part of the arc-stripe reaching the base of the lower caudal-fin rays, and from C. arcuatus and C. narcissus by the distinctly rounded profile of the snout in lateral view, a greater preadipose distance, and the position of the posterior limit of the cleithrum. Despite the general resemblance, investigation about the position of the new species in light of previous phylogenetic hypotheses concerning this subfamily indicates that the arc-striped coloration pattern was independently acquired.Uma nova espé cie de Corydoras da bacia do Rio Urucu, um afluente da margem direita do Rio Solimões, é descrita. A nova espé cie é prontamente distinta destas congêneres pela ausência de continuação da faixa se estendendo até o focinho. També m se distingue de Corydoras gracilis e C. narcissus pela extremidade posterior da faixa em arco alcançar a base dos raios inferiores da nadadeira caudal, e de C. arcuatus e C. narcissus pelo perfil do focinho distintamente arredondado em vista lateral, pela maior distância pré -adiposa, e pela posição do limite posterior do cleitro. Apesar da semelhança, investigações sobre a posição da nova espé cie a luz de hipó teses filogené ticas pré vias sobre a subfamília, indicam que o padrão de colorido com uma faixa em arco foi adquirido independentemente.

A new loricariin species of Sturisoma is described from the Cautário, Guaporé, Mamoré, Machado and Soteiro rivers, Madeira River basin, in Bolivia and Brazil. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by the presence of a middorsal longitudinal, thin dark brown stripe on the caudal peduncle, extending from two or three plates posterior to the dorsal-fin base, reaching the origin of the caudal fin, or one or two plates anterior to the origin of the caudal fin; small squarish anteriormost abdominal plates; and a middorsal longitudinal dark-brown stripe from first predorsal plate to near the dorsal-fin origin. Furthermore, the new species is diagnosed from congeners by plate morphology, counts on the median series, coalescent plates and ventrolateral thoracic plates, in addition to measurements related to body and head structures. An analysis of genetic distances using cytochrome C oxidase subunit 1 gene marker of the mitochondrial genome between the new species and several congeners is presented, in addition to a likelihood analysis to illustrate the position of the new taxon within Sturisoma. An identification key for species of the genus currently recorded at the upper Amazonas River basin is provided.
