M a r k T u r n e rInstitute Professor at Case Western Reserve University M a í r a A v e l a r Resumo: In this paper, we aim at presenting the concept of Blended Classic Joint Attention, BCJA (TURNER, 2015). At first, we discuss the concept of Classic Joint Attention (TOMASELLO, 1995, THOMAS;TURNER 2011) and then illustrate BCJA using a scene from a video made by Jout Jout, a Brazilian youtuber. After that, we discuss the concept of multimodal deixis and present our data which consist of four samples collected from the Distributed Little Red Hen Lab. Two of them are from Brazilian TV news and the other two from the US talk-show "The Daily Show". We analyzed the multimodal verbo-gestural compounds in which the spatial deictics "here" and "aqui" co-occur with manual gestures and eye gaze. Results show that in less prototypical examples, with fixed expressions, there is no interaction with the viewer. On the other hand, in more prototypical examples, the eye gaze is aimed at the viewer, while the manual gesture is aimed at the immediate interlocutor.
Palavras-chave: dêixis; integração experiencial; gestos.ABSTRACT: This paper focuses on the spatial deictics 'aqui' (here) and 'lá' (there) in Brazilian Portuguese political discourse, using videotaped data. Drawing on the Cognitive linguistics framework, the analysis conjugates Mental Spaces Theory and Cognitive Grammar, relying on the notion of Conceptual integration (FaUCOnnier & TUrner, 2002), and the related notion of experiential integration (aUCHlin, 2013), as well as the operation of construal, and the related concept of focalization based on foreground/background distinctions (lanGaCKer, 1991(lanGaCKer, , 2008(lanGaCKer, , 2013. For the characterization of emergent structure in the blended space, we investigate the relations between specific deictic uses of 'aqui' (here) and 'lá' (there) and associated gestural configurations The results suggest that discursive uses of 'aqui' and 'lá' emerge from the integration of a conceptual input space, which contains the deictic' linguistic structure, and an experiential input space, containing specific gesture configurations. The integration of these input spaces allows the speaker to select discourse pieces s/he wishes to make prominent.
This work aims to compare the occurrence of negative emotion words in Brazilian broadcast news JN and JR, and also analyzes Twitter posts related to them. We use the Brazilian Portuguese version of LIWC dictionary, which is a Sentiment Analysis software. The results indicate that both JN and JR tend to use negative emotion words, but in JR this tendency is greater. Nevertheless, Twitter posts direct more criticisms towards JN than JR.
Outras duas ocorrências instanciaram a metáfora orientacional less is down (“Menos é para baixo”) e o Esquema Imagético Trajetória.
Análise do Discurso. Retórica. Fenomenologia. Teoria da Enunciação. AbstractThe study of the emotions has become an object of recent and enticing research in Discourse Analysis (DA). In this research, we aim to present/show a theoretical overview of emotions, trying to articulate among DA and another knowledge fields that have clearly influenced its theoretical formulation about the emotions, such as: Rhetoric, Phenomenology and Utterance Theory. We will show the regularities among these four knowledge fields through the analysis of a representative work of each one. Then, we will verify the influence and confluence of other knowledge fields in the DA theoretical formulations about the emotions, trying to observe how the DA researchers use theories that belong to the linguistic field, as well as the philosophical field, in order to create a discursive theory that takes into account the analysis of the emotions.
For structuring spatial relations, Brazilian Portuguese has four basic deictic forms: “aqui” (nearer to the speaker), “aí” (nearer to the addressee), “ali” (near to both speaker and addressee), and “lá” (distal from both speaker and addressee), whereas American English has a two-way distinction, linguistically expressed by “here” (near to the speaker) and “there” (distal from both the speaker and the hearer). Considering these differences, we aim at investigating how manual gestures operate along with speech, to point out to referents both located in the immediate interactional scene, the Ground [1], and projected in a non-immediate scene, narrated by the speaker. To do so, we collected 60 videos [2], 10 for each deictic, from late-night talk shows broadcasted in Brazilian, as well as in American TV broadcasts. As we carried out a gestural form and function analysis, the Linguistic Annotation System for Gestures [3], was adopted, which provided categorization tools to describe and analyze the verbo-gestural compounds encompassing locative deictic expressions both in American English and in Brazilian Portuguese. Results from both languages data samples support the hypothesis that the most frequent gestures that go along with the verbally uttered deictic expression is the pointing gesture. However, Brazilian Portuguese speakers predominantly use Pointing with Index Finger, associated to more prototypical deictic uses [4]. On the other hand, American English speakers mostly use Pointing with Open Hand, which is more associated to abstract ideas related to the conversational topic [4]. Considering gesture functions, it was also supported the hypothesis that referential function was predominant in both data samples. However, when the referential function was divided into concrete and abstract, Brazilian Portuguese shows a predominance of abstract deictic [5] uses, locating objects or entities in the imagined narrative scene. American English shows a predominance of concrete referential uses, locating objects or entities on the immediate scene. Finally, when the use of the verbo-gestural compounds is related to the ICM of Deixis [6], the comparison between Brazilian Portuguese and American English datasets indicates a cognitive resemblance between both languages, even though the deictic spatial relations are linguistically established in different ways on the same discursive genre.
