This cross-sectional study aimed to explore Turkish midwifery students' perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care and to investigate the factors affecting them. Data were collected from 271 students of the Midwifery Department of the High School of Health of a state university in the west of Turkey using the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale. A significant difference was found between belief in the need for spiritual care and the practice of spiritual care during midwifery training and the total score on the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale, but no significant difference was found between the students' year of class, whether they had heard about spiritual care, and their state of knowledge concerning spiritual care. An increase in awareness, knowledge and skills relating to spirituality and spiritual care on the part of midwifery students, who are the midwives of the future, will allow students to provide spiritual care to their patients after they qualify. For this reason, the education program of midwifery students should be seen from a holistic standpoint in order to develop spiritual care.

Objective: This study seeks to examine the professional organization status and expectations of midwives working in İzmir provincial centre. Methodology: This descriptive survey was conducted in three maternity hospitals in İzmir. It was completed with 131 midwives out of a total of 306 who could be accessed and agreed to fill out the questionnaire. A questionnaire consisting of 24 questions designed by the survey team was used in collecting data. Descriptive statistics were used in data analysis. Findings: The average age of midwives included in the survey was 35.98±6.04 and 57.6% of them have their service experience of 16 years or longer. 13.7% of participants have membership to the Association of Midwives; one-third want to join and 70% are either undecided or do not want to join. The main reason for not being member seems to be their lack of information about the existence of the association. 84% of midwives want the association to launch local branches. The common demand from the nationwide professional organization is for the protection of the rights and status of midwives. Conclusion: It is found that midwives working in maternity hospitals are not at desired level in terms of their membership to their national professional organization and they are short of information about national and international level organizations of midwives. Their major expectations from these organizations include the protection of their rights and status, revision in related legislation and giving weight to awareness building, promotion and scientific activities.
