Under shade, tiller population leaf area and forage mass index were higher in the second year than in the first. Forage neutral detergent fiber value was higher at full sunlight than in the shade, while the crude protein content and in vitro dry matter digestibility were higher under the trees. Moderate shading increases crude protein and reduces neutral detergent fiber, therefore improving forage digestibility of grasses growing under trees.
ABSTRACTThe behavior of Holtein x Zebu crossbreed cows was studied in silvipastoral system, taking in account the time spent by the cows in the stand up position, eating, ruminating or in inactivity, during the summer and winter times. Measures of the time spent by the cows at sunshine and under the shadow was also taken. Data from 32 cows, were collected every ten minutes, 12 hours a day (from 6 A.M. to 6 P.M.), in twelve days, six during the winter and six during the summer times. The data were analyzed through variance system and to multiple comparison among average it was used the t test of student, at the level of 5% of probability. During the winter, cows spent more time at sunshine than in summer time while in the summer the cows remained more time in the shadow mainly under the trees with big and dense crowns. The silvipastoral system should be considered as important tool for animal comfort in the tropical conditions.
The silvopastoral system (SPS) has been suggested to ensure sustainability in animal production systems in tropical ecosystems. The objective of this study was to evaluate pasture characteristics, herbage intake, grazing activity and milk yield of Holstein × Zebu cows managed in two grazing systems (treatments): SPS dominated by a graminaceous forage (Brachiaria decumbens) intercropped with different leguminous herbaceous forages (Stylosanthes spp., Pueraria phaseoloides and Calopogonium mucunoides) and legume trees (Acacia mangium, Gliricidia sepium and Leucaena leucocephala), and open pasture (OP) of B. decumbens intercropped only with Stylosanthes spp. Pastures were managed according to the rules for organic cattle production. The study was carried out by following a switch back format with 12 cows, 6 for each treatment, over 3 experimental years. Herbage mass was similar ( P > 0.05) for both treatments, supporting an average stocking rate of 1.23 AU/ha. Daily dry matter intake did not vary ( P > 0.05) between treatments (average of 11.3 ± 1.02 kg/cow per day, corresponding to 2.23 ± 0.2% BW). Milk yield was higher ( P < 0.05; 10.4 ± 0.06 kg/cow per day) in the SPS than in the OP (9.5 ± 0.06 kg/cow per day) during the 1 st year, but did not significantly differ ( P > 0.05) in subsequent years. The highest ( P < 0.05) values for herbage mass and milk yield were observed during the 3 rd year. In the SPS, with moderate shade (19% shade relative to a full-sun condition), the grass CP was higher ( P < 0.05) than in the OP, although the NDF content and digestibility coefficient were not modified. The animals spent more time ( P < 0.05) idling in the SPS than in OP. The higher legume proportion in the SPS was associated with the higher CP level in B. decumbens relative to the OP, which could explain the better ( P < 0.05) performance of the cows in silvopastoral areas during the 1 st year. However, during the 2 nd and 3 rd years, similarities in the legume percentages of both systems resulted in similar ( P > 0.05) milk yields. Low persistence of Stylosanthes guianensis was observed over the experimental period, indicating that the persistence of forage legumes under grazing could be improved using adapted cultivars that have higher annual seed production. The SPS and a diversified botanical composition of the pasture using legume species mixed with grasses are recommended for organic milk production.
Morphogenesis and leaf biomass accumulation in elephantgrass sward evaluated at diferent period of the yearAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the time of the year on morphogenetic and structural traits and leaf biomass accumulation of elephantgrass (Pennisetum purpureum Schum.). The sward was managed in a rotational stocking method with lactacting cows with 30 days of resting period and three days of paddock occupation. A randomized block and six replicates were used. Evaluations were carried out at February/March, April/May, July/August and October of 2001. Higher values of leaf appearance and expansion rates were observed during the February/March period. Although the aerial tiller density was greater than the basal one, they showed lower leaf expansion (5.1 versus 9.8 cm/day/tiller), appearance (0.13 versus 0.16 leaves/day/tiller) and senescence (0.9 versus 1.3 cm/day/tiller) rates. The forage mass production and accumulation rates of leaf biomass were higher during February/March period and showed strong relationship with pasture morphogenetic traits. The aerial tillers contributed, in average, with 63% of total elephantgrass leaf biomass. Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) are potent anticarcinogens in animal and in vitro models as well as inhibitors of fatty acid synthesis in mammary gland, liver, and adipose tissue. Our objective was to evaluate long-term CLA supplementation of lactating dairy cows in tropical pasture on milk production and composition and residual effects posttreatment. Thirty crossbred cows grazing stargrass (Cynodon nlemfuensis Vanderyst var. nlemfüensis) were blocked by parity and received 150 g/d of a dietary fat supplement of either Ca-salts of palm oil fatty acids (control) or a mixture of Ca-salts of CLA (CLA treatment). Supplements of fatty acids were mixed with 4 kg/d of concentrate. Grazing plus supplements were estimated to provide 115% of the estimated metabolizable protein requirements from 28 to 84 d in milk (treatment period). The CLA supplement provided 15 g/d of cis-9,trans-11 and 22g of cis-10,trans-12. Residual effects were evaluated from 85 to 112 d in milk (residual period) when cows were fed an 18% crude protein concentrate without added fat. The CLA treatment increased milk production but reduced milk fat concentration from 2.90 to 2.14% and fat production from 437 to 348 g/d. Milk protein concentration increased by 11.5% (2.79 to 3.11%) and production by 19% (422 to 504 g/d) in the cows fed CLA. The CLA treatment decreased milk energy concentration and increased milk volume, resulting in unchanged energy output. Milk production and protein concentration and production were also greater during the residual period for the CLA-treated cows. The CLA treatment reduced production of fatty acids (FA) of all chain lengths, but the larger effect was on short-chain FA, causing a shift toward a greater content of longer chain FA. The CLA treatment increased total milk CLA content by 30% and content of the trans-10,cis-12 CLA isomer by 88%. The CLA treatment tended to decrease the number of days open, suggesting a possible effect on reproduction. Under tropical grazing conditions, in a nutritionally challenging environment, CLA-treated cows decreased milk fat content and secreted the same amount of milk energy by increasing milk volume and milk protein production.
Productive and qualitative traits of Brachiaria decumbens pasture in monoculture and associated with Stylosanthes guianensisAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the forage mass and botanical composition of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf pasture in monoculture and associated with Stylosanthes guianensis (Aubl.) Sw. var. vulgaris cv. Mineirão in various months along the year. The samples from January and May were rumen incubated. Three paddocks (replications) were divided in two plots (monoculture and associated pastures). After the evaluations forage was grazed by dried cows. The forage mass of B. decumbens did not vary with the pasture system; in October it was lower (291 kg/ha) and maintained stable along the other months (1,571 kg/ha). A decrease tendency of legume forage mass was observed during the experimental period. The proportion of S. guianensis in the pasture was higher in October/ 2001 and lower in January/2002. The total forage mass of associated pasture (2,158 kg/ha) was higher than the monoculture pasture (1,481 kg/ha).
