Rosmarinus officinalis L. (Family Lamiaceae), popularly named rosemary, is a common household plant grown in many parts of the world, including Brazil. Rosemary leaves are used for food flavoring and have been used in folk medicine for many conditions; they have antispasmodic, analgesic, antirheumatic, carminative, cholagogue, diuretic, expectorant, and antiepileptic effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of rosemary essential oil (REO) on experimental models of nociception and inflammation in animals. The anti-inflammatory effect of REO was evaluated by inflammatory exudate volume and leukocyte migration in carrageenan-induced pleurisy and carrageenan-induced paw edema tests in rats. Antinociception was evaluated using the acetic acid-induced writhing and hot plate tests in mice. REO (500 mg/kg) significantly reduced the volume of pleural exudate and slightly decreased the number of cells that had migrated compared with the control animals. At doses of 250, 500, and 750 mg/kg, REO significantly inhibited carrageenan-induced edema 1-4 hours after injection of the phlogistic agent. In the hot plate test, REO administration (125, 250, and 500 mg/kg) showed unremarkable effects on response latency, whereas control injection of meperidine induced significant antinociceptive effects. REO at doses of 70, 125, and 250 mg/kg had a significant antinociceptive effect in the acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing test compared with control animals. These data suggest that REO possesses anti-inflammatory and peripheral antinociceptive activity.

This study investigated the kinetics of cytokines that are involved in the development of interstitial fibrosis in mice that were subjected to UUO, the interstitial type I and III collagen deposition, and the effects of Thalido and Dexa treatment on these parameters. Inbred C57BL/6 mice were divided into the groups: Normal (not submitted surgery), Sham (sham surgery), Control (UUO treated with 0.5% carboxymethyl cellulose), Thalido (UUO treated with 5 mg/kg thalidomide), and Dexa (UUO treated with 1 mg/kg dexamethasone). The treatments began the day before surgery and were administered once daily by gavage for 1, 7, or 14 days. At the end of each treatment period, blood samples were collected for the determination of creatinine, urea, cytokines. The Control group exhibited a increase in creatinine concentration compared with the Normal and Sham groups within the first 24 h after UUO, which remained high until days 7 and 14. The urea concentration was higher on days 7 and 14 in the Control group compared with the Sham group. In the Thalido and Dexa groups, a reduction of serum creatinine concentration was seen on day 14. Treatment with Dexa reduced the serum concentration of urea on day 7. The serum concentrations of cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-17) and chemokines (KC, MIG, bFGF) increased in UUO mice at all of the sampling times. The Dexa and Thalido groups exhibited alterations in the concentrations of these cytokines, suggesting the involvement of anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory mechanisms that may have modified the fibrosis framework.

ABSTRACT. The study evaluated the influence of maternal age on the low birth weight (LBW), prematurity and deaths of newborns (NB). Was a descriptive, exploratory, retrospective and comparative study realized in Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of a university hospital in Brazil, with seven hundred six NB admitted in the NICU in the period of five years. The results showed high rate of childbirths of teenage mothers (27%). Among teenage mothers (193), 80% of their NB had low birth weight, and 84% were premature; and among adult mothers (513), 69% had low birth weight, and 77% were premature. During the study, 102 NB have died (mortality rate of 14.5%). The analysis of the relative risk (RR) of indicators -LBW (RR=1.75, CI95%=1.17-2.62, p < 0.006), prematurity (RR=1.60, CI95%=1.03-2.50, p < 0.03) -evidenced a higher probability of death for the NB from teenage mothers, with birth weight < 2500 grams or premature, than NB from adult mothers. In conclusion the outcome showed that the number of deaths during the neonatal period was not related to maternal age, but the prematurity and the low birth weight was.Keywords: maternal age, teenage pregnancy, newborns, high risk pregnancy, low birth weight, prematurity.Fatores de risco para mortalidade em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal: influência da idade materna RESUMO. Este trabalho investigou a influência da idade materna sobre o baixo peso ao nascer (BPN), prematuridade e morte em recém-nascidos (RN). Foi um estudo descritivo, exploratório, retrospectivo e comparativo realizado em Unidade de Terapia Intensiva Neonatal (UTIN) de um hospital universitário no Brasil. Foram incluídos no estudo setecentos e seis RN internados na UTIN, no período de cinco anos. Os resultados mostraram elevada taxa de partos de mães adolescentes (27%). Entre as mães adolescentes (193), 80% dos RN apresentaram baixo peso ao nascer, e 84% foram prematuros. Entre as mães adultas (513), 69% dos RN foram identificados com baixo peso ao nascer, e 77% prematuros. Durante o estudo, 102 RN foram a óbito, correspondendo a 14,5% de mortalidade. A análise do risco relativo (RR) dos indicadores baixo peso ao nascer (BPN) (RR = 1,75, IC95% = 1,17-2,62, p < 0,006) e prematuridade (RR = 1,60, IC95% = 1,03-2,50, p < 0,03) demonstrou uma maior probabilidade de morte para o RN de mães adolescentes, com peso de nascimento <2500 gramas ou prematuro, quando comparado aos RN de mães adultas. We report the case of a woman who was diagnosed with a pulmonary artery aneurysm that was caused by Behçet's disease. The patient was initially diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and then pulmonary thromboembolism and aneurysm of the right pulmonary artery segmental branch was confirmed. The initial treatment consisted of anticoagulant drugs. After analysis of the family history and a positive pathergy test, the patient was diagnosed with Behçet's disease. Oral pharmacological treatment began with corticosteroids, cyclophosphamide, and anticoagulant suspension. The HLA B72 allele was identified in the patient and her two sisters, demonstrating the familial characteristic of the disease and the presence of this allele in a female patient with Behçet's disease. After 12 months of treatment, the clinical condition completely resolved.

Infere-se que muitas pesquisas comprovam o papel de vários fatores de saúde, estilo de vida e doenças na expressão da sonolência diurna excessiva. O presente estudo teve por objetivo demonstrar o perfil clínico-epidemiológico da sonolência diurna excessiva com base nos seus achados na literatura mediante aplicação de duas escalas subjetivas utilizadas em protocolos de pesquisa e centros de avaliação do sono, são elas: a Escala de Sonolência de Epworth e Índice de Qualidade do Sono de Pittsburgh. Trata-se de uma revisão bibliográfica, em que foram elegíveis artigos primários, com data de publicação de 1999 até 2018, em que se utilizou as seguintes bases de dados referenciais: Biblioteca Virtual de Saúde (Bvs), Web of Science; Periódico da Capes; Scopus; SciELO; Social Science Research Network (SSRN); PubMed; LILACS e MEDLINE Complete. Na seleção crítica dos artigos de estudos transversais, recorreu-se à Appraisal tool for Cross-Sectional Studies (AXIS). Verificou-se que medidas autorrelatadas são prontamente obtidas com questionários validados como a Escala de Epworth (ESS) e Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Outrossim, a literatura evidencia a relevância da análise e diagnóstico da sonolência diurna excessiva mediante o uso de exames eletrofisiológicos incluindo videopolissonografia noturna, teste de latências múltiplas do sono, teste de manutenção da vigília e actigrafia. A fadiga foi relacionada à depressão, à ansiedade e à qualidade do sono, mas não a sonolência diurna excessiva. Por último, indivíduos obesos, quando operados pela cirurgia metabólica pela técnica de desvio biliopancreático apresentaram normalização da sonolência diurna excessiva.
