Wave formation and erosive processes in the margins of Lake XingóA B S T R A C TThe characteristics of the winds have a great influence in the way the waves are generated, they propagate and they promote erosion in the riverbanks and lakes. Among these characteristics, wind speed and direction play an important role, influencing the main parameters that characterize waves, namely wave height and period (duration time). The objective of this work was to characterize the generation of waves in the Xingó Power Dam and the consequences on the erosive processes. Data were collected in situ and compiled from the available sources in the SIMA - Integrated Environmental Monitoring System. Wind data collection was carried out using an anemometer installed at specific periods of the year, at different points in the lake margin, to allow the comparison with previous data collected by SIMA. The erosion recognized in the extension of the fetchs were georeferenced, and their association with the dominant direction of the winds was carried out, which promote the consequent formation of waves. Higher daytime winds were observed than the nocturnal ones in drier periods, and also the development of waves accompanying this trend, that is, smaller at night than in the daytime. Eight (8) representative fetchs of the prevailing winds in the Xingó Power Dam were identified, all of them strongly related to the identified erosion spots, and with few variation in the maximum wave heights values for all identified values not exceeding the value of 0.16m and in the daytime period. Keywords: Wind speed, fetch; São Francisco River; erosion.
The characterization of the plant root system is of great importance for the understanding of its contribution to soil shear resistance, constituting an important tool for decision making in soil bioengineering works. The objective of this work was to evaluate the growth and distribution characteristics of the root system of Paspalum millegrana Schrad. grass in Entisol using Digital Imaging Processing (DIP). The data were obtained by opening a soil pit to expose the root system of Paspalum grass up to 1.70 m depth. The profile wall and volumetric ring methods were used to collect quantitative information of the root system. The SAFIRA software and the ArcMAP software belonging to the ArcGIS suite were used for image processing. The profile wall method showed that Paspalum grass has a large volume of roots in the first 0.40 m to 1.30 m soil depth. It was observed that the root length and volume of Paspalum grass reach depths beyond 1.70 m, which is important to increase soil resistance to erosion processes. The profile wall method when compared to the volumetric ring method proved to be more efficient to understand the behavior of the Paspalum grass root system since it enables an assessment of its spatial distribution with better detailing.
The use of organic fertilizers facilitates the production of plant species compared to industrial fertilizers, with a remarkable contribution to soil and water conservation through soil structuring. Vetiver grass (Chrysopogon zizanioides (L.) Roberty) is widely used in soil bioengineering projects to stabilize slopes, increasing the resistance of the soil to shear strength. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the development of vetiver grass at different doses of organic fertilizer on soil stabilization. An experimental test was carried out in a greenhouse, in pots, using the following doses of organic fertilizer: T0-0 g (control); T1-135 g; T2-270 g and T3-405 g of organic fertilizer. Shoot Dry Matter (SDM), Root Dry Matter (RDM), Root Length (RL), Number of Tillers per Plant (NT) and Plant Height (PH) were evaluated. The collected data were submitted to regression analysis at 5% probability. The analysed variables showed increasing values as greater amounts of organic fertilizer, leading to an increase in soil nutrient availability and, consequently, to improved plant development.

Several plant species have been studied as reinforcement elements against landslides at slopes, either to protect against the splash effect offered by shoots or anchoring the soil by the root system. The objective of this work was to investigate the influence of roots from shrub species over the soil mechanical attributes such as cohesion and angle of internal friction at the São Francisco riverbank, northeastern Brazil. A trench was excavated under the treetop of every shrubby individual, sampling blocks at 0-0.25, 0.25-0.50, 0.50-0.75, and 0.75-1.00 m depths. The moisture contents, particle size, liquidity limits, plasticity and actual specific mass of the samples were determined. The soil physical and mechanical attributes such as initial and final specific weight, initial and final void content, initial and final degree of saturation, shear resistance peaks, cohesion, and internal friction angle were identified through direct, elementary, consolidated, and undrained tests. In the samples with Solanum paniculatum, Mimosa pigra species, the highest values for cohesion were registered for the samples with roots. Sesbania virgata presented the greatest variation in cohesion and internal friction angle among samples with and without roots. The position and root status influenced the results of the direct shear tests.
