La narrativa de Antonio Benitez Rojo se concentra en la representaci6n de la sociedad cubana antes y despuds de la Revoluci6n de 1959, ahondando mis en la continuidad que en la ruptura entre esos dos periodos de la historia de Cuba. A lo largo de su cuentistica, Benitez Rojo plantea miltiples facetas de la inautenticidad de la sociedad prerrevolucionaria, tales como su inestabilidad, desarraigo, provisionalidad, heterogeneidad, sincretismo e inclinaci6n al disimulo. Sin embargo, esta critica a los valores de la Cuba democritica es algo mas que la justificaci6n de la Revoluci6n; es tambiin una estrategia del autor para velar su evaluaci6n de la sociedad revolucionaria en cuyo seno produce sus ficciones. En efecto, el principio narrativo que traslucen algunas obras de Benitez Rojo consiste en crear un cuadro critico de los males politicos, econ6micos y morales de la Cuba precastrista, dejando ciertos cabos sueltos, ciertas claves que subvierten el cuadro presentado y apuntan a las fallas de la configuraci6n politica, econ6mica y moral de la sociedad revolucionaria. <> (1969) y <> (1976) son los dos relatos en que esta creaci6n y subversi6n resulta mas evidente. A lo largo del primero, Benitez Rojo sugiere que una de las manifestaciones de la inautenticidad de la sociedad revolucionaria es la tendencia oficial a reprimir los componentes africanos de la cultura nacional, especialmente los cultos religiosos como el santero, en aras del igualitarismo.
