This study investigates the role of prosody in the reading aloud of dyslexic children. Ten dyslexic and 30 non-dyslexic control children (mean age 9.5 and 9.9 years, respectively) were recorded when reading a text of appropriate level and subsequently asked to retell it and tested on its comprehension. The data were analysed acoustically by the WinPitchPro programme. The temporal and intonational processing of reading of the two groups were contrasted and revealed unusual characteristics of the dyslexic group with respect to what follows: (1) temporal processing (reduced speeds of reading and articulation and alterations in the number and duration of pauses); (2) variation of the fundamental frequency (limited ability to vary the melody at the phrasal and phonemic level); and (3) vowel stress patterning (difficulty in producing typical stress patterns, and of marking the pre-stressed and stressed syllables). Fulfilling its objective, the present study promotes advances in the understanding of the functioning of prosody in reading aloud in dyslexia.
Objective: To assess the efficacy of two school-based programmes to promote students' willingness to engage in lifestyle changes related to eating habits and physical activity behaviours. Design: Elementary school-based health promotion intervention, designed as a multicomponent experimental study, based on a behavioural epidemiological model. Setting: Nine intervention and eight comparative public and private elementary schools. Subjects: The goal was to determine the impact on the longitudinally assessed outcomes of two programmes that addressed healthy nutrition and active living in a cohort of 2038 children. The evaluations used pre-intervention and follow-up student surveys that were based on the Transtheoretical Model of the stages of behaviour change. Results: In the intervention group, there were significant (P , 0?001) differences between the pre-and post-intervention times in the stages of change, with a reduction in the percentage of children at the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages and increased percentages at the preparation, action and maintenance stages, leading to healthier behaviours in fatty food consumption, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical activity and time spent in sedentary activities. The determinants of the behaviour stage were the intervention programme, the type of school and the presence of motivated teachers. The comparison group did not show significant differences between the pre-and post-intervention times for any of the stages of behaviour. Conclusions: The intervention programme encouraged the students to make healthy lifestyle choices related to eating habits and physical activity behaviours. Keywords Healthy lifestyleOverweight Obesity School Children PreventionOverweight and obesity (excess body weight) has increased dramatically in southern Latin America (1) . In south-eastern Brazil 40?3 % of boys and 38?0 % of girls are overweight or obese (2) . There has been a threefold increase in the incidence of excess body weight (8?9 % to 26?5 %) from 1974-75 to 2008-09 (2) . This increase in childhood overweight and obesity has been attributed to behavioural factors that cause a long-term imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Behavioural problems require behavioural solutions (3,4) and therefore prevention of excess body weight through targeted behavioural change has become a public health priority (5,6) .In Brazil, consumption of energy-dense, high-fat foods has increased to above recommended levels, while physical activity (PA) and consumption of fruit and vegetables (F&V) have fallen well below the recommended levels (7) .These behaviours have resulted in an increase in obesityrelated co-morbidities such as IHD, stroke and diabetes, which account for a high percentage of total disabilityadjusted life years lost (8) . Sedentary lifestyles account for 69 % of the cardiovascular risk factor prevalence in Brazil (9) .Suggested behavioural solutions include increased moderate-to-vigorous PA among school-aged children and reduced sedentary t...
PALAVRAS-CHAVE:fonoaudiologia; ensino; docentes; comunicação; educação especial.ABSTRACT: this research aimed to investigate the inclusion process of children with special needs in Primary Schools, interaction among regular schools and special education centers, as well as the role of the many professionals involved, focusing specifically on the speech therapist. The method used was a descriptive analytical survey; a questionnaire was applied in six Special Education Schools and six Regular Schools of the public school system of the city of Belo Horizonte. Six coordinators and 42 teachers from the regular schools and nine coordinators and 61 teachers from the special education schools took part in the study, which involved a total of 118 individuals. The questionnaire covered aspects related to school administration, teacher education, student profile, professionals involved in the educational process, and forms of contact between Health and Education institutions that provide services. Among other issues, the analysis of the results showed a great demand for speech therapy services, which as yet are generally unavailable in the field of education. Interaction between the two types of schools does not occur in all the institutions that were researched. Both types have limited knowledge of Speech Therapy, especially in re...
Introduction: The effective development of reading and writing skills requires the concerted action of several abilities, one of which is phonological processing. One of the main components of phonological processing is rapid automatized naming (RAN)—the ability to identify and recognize a given item by the activation and concomitant articulation of its name. Objective: To assess the RAN performance of schoolchildren with dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared with their peers. Methods: In total, 70 schoolchildren aged between 8 and 11 years participated in the study. Of these, 16 children had a multiprofessional diagnosis of ADHD while 14 were diagnosed with dyslexia. Matched with these groups, 40 schoolchildren with no history of developmental impairments were also evaluated. The RAN test was administered to assess the length of time required to name a series of familiar visual stimuli. The statistical analysis was conducted using measures of descriptive statistics and the 2-sample t-test at the 5% significance level. Results: The performance of the group with dyslexia was inferior to that of the control group in all tasks and the ADHD group had inferior performance for color and letters-naming tasks. The schoolchildren with dyslexia and those with ADHD showed very similar response times. Age was an important variable to be analyzed separately. As they aged, children with typical language development had fast answers on colors and digits tasks while children with dyslexia or ADHD did not show improvement with age. Conclusions: The schoolchildren with dyslexia took longer to complete all tasks and ADHD took longer to complete digits and objects tasks in comparison to their peers with typical development. This ability tended to improve with age, which was not the case, however, with schoolchildren who had ADHD or dyslexia.
