SALINE WATER AND LIQUID BOVINE MANURE IN SEEDLINGS FORMATION OF GUAVA CULTIVAR PALUMAABSTRACT -The salinity of the soils and of the waters, in a lot of arid and semi-arid areas of the Brazilian northeast constitutes a serious obstacle for the system of agricultural production. During the period from November 2007 to February 2008 an experiment was carried out in order to evaluate the effects of the irrigation water salinity and liquid bovine manure during the seedlings formation of guava cv. Paluma. The treatments were distributed in a randomized block design, in a factorial scheme 5 x 2, referring to levels of water salinity (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0 dS m -1 ) in soil without and with liquid bovine manure in six replications and six plants per plot. Soil salinity was markedly elevated with an increasing salinity of irrigation water refl ecting on decline of plant growth in height, stem diameter, leaf area, growth of roots and biomass production by guava plants, but with less intensity in plants with liquid bovine manure. The plants under irrigation with saline water and the organic product exceeded those treatments without the product at 86.9, 72.4, 11.0, 252.4, 351.0 and 39.7% of growth in height, stem diameter, length of roots, leaf area and biomass of roots and shoots respectively.
Completely randomized block experimental design was used with a 2 3 factorial arrangement, three repetitions and 72 experimental units. Treatments were irrigated with non saline (0.5 dS m -1 ) and saline (4.5 dS m -1 ) water, in holes with and without bovine biofertilizer, with and without mulching. After harvesting fresh mass, width, length, format index, thickness and percentage of skin, number of seeds, pulp mass, juice mass, pH, pulp revenue, soluble solids, titratable acidity, SS/TA ratio and vitamin C content were evaluated. Treatments with bovine biofertilizer and mulching presented weightier fruits, independently of saline water level. Bovine biofertilizer affected fruit skin thickness, soluble solids and titratable acidity. The highest vitamin C contents were obtained in fruits from two treatments: irrigated with non saline water and biofertilized, and irrigated with saline water, not biofertilized and with mulching.
The treatments were distributed using 5 x 4 factorial design corresponding the five EC of irrigation plant water of 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 dS m -1 , in four frequencies of application of the biofertilizer: without bovine biofertilizer (SB); with application one week before transplanting (1 SAT); application with intervals of 90 days after transplanting (90 DAT); and, with application one week before transplanting and at intervals of 90 days (1 SAT + 90 DAT). From the results it is verified that the increased salinity of water inhibited the pulp yield, the total soluble solids (TSS), pH, the ratio of total soluble solids and titratable acidity (TSS/AT) and vitamin "C "in juice, providing increased acidity and electrical conductivity of the juice. The increased frequency of application of the biofertilizer, despite increasing the electrical conductivity of the juice diminished the degenerative effects of salts of irrigation water to plants, resulting in an increase in pulp yield, vitamin "C" and also reduced the ratio TSS/AT and the pH of the pulp of yellow passion fruit.
Abstract:The intensity of the stress caused in crops by salinity will largely depend on the level of tolerance of the species or cultivar, and on the management strategies used. The aim of this study therefore, was to evaluate growth and physiological response in two cultivars of the cowpea, irrigated with saline water and subjected to different levels of potassium under sheltered conditions. Seeds of the cultivars, EC 790 and EC 104 were used, which were exposed to increasing levels of salinity, using irrigation water with an electrical conductivity (CEa) of 0.8, 2.2, 3.6 and 5.0 dS m -1 , and increasing rates of potassium (K) in the form of KCl (0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g KCl per pot). Readings were taken of leaf gas exchange and plant growth (length of main stem, stem diameter and total dry matter) at 47 and 55 days after planting (DAP) respectively. Increases in the salinity of the irrigation water reduced the length of the main stem, the stem diameter and total dry matter in both cultivars. The larger levels of potassium together with the salinity resulted in a depressive effect on the growth of the main stem and on stomatal conductance, compared to the isolated effect of salinity, indicating an enhanced osmotic effect. The existence of an interaction between salinity and potassium is an indication that the optimal level of the nutrie...
Palavras-chave: Carica papaya L, propagação, água de barragem, cloreto de sódio, sulfato de sódio AbstractFrom January to March of 2005 one experiment was developed in a screen house to evaluate the effect of sources and levels of water salinity on emergence and initial development of papaya seedlings cv. Sunrise Solo. A completely randomized experimental design was used and treatments were distributed in a factorial arrangement 3×5, corresponding to three sources (dam water, water salinized with sodium and water salinized with sodium sulfate) and five water saline levels (0.4; 2.0; 4.0; 6.0 e 8.0 dS.m -1 ) and five replications. At 60 days after seedling emergence the following variables were evaluated: soil electrical conductivity, seedling emergence, plant height, stem diameter and dry mass of shoots and roots. The soil electrical conductivity increased independently of salt source, with more expressiveness for dam water, and all evaluated variables of plant growth were inhibited with water salinity increase.
In Northeastern Brazil, the sweet potato is cultivated in small farms, in a family farming systems, constituting themselves an alternative way for the generation of food, employment and income. This study aimed to assess the effect of cattle manure levels and biofertilizer concentrations on the sweet potato cultivar White Queen productivity. The experiment was carried out from March to September 2007 at the EMEPA Experimental Station in Lagoa Seca, Brazil. The experimental design was randomized blocks, in split split plot 6 x 4 x 2 + 1 scheme, with four replications. The plots consisted of cattle manure levels (0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 t ha -1 ), the subplot of biofertilizer concentrations (0, 15, 30 and 45%) and the sub subplots consisted of methods of biofertilizer application, to the soil or leaves. Also, there was an additional control treatment using N, P and K mineral fertilizer. Commercial and total root productivity was evaluated. The levels of 30.8 and 31.2 t ha -1 of cattle manure were responsible for the highest commercial and total sweet potato root productivity (17.4 and 13.1 t ha -1 , respectively). Biofertilizer concentrations of 29 and 28%, applied to soil and to leaves provided, respectively, the greatest productivities of total roots (15.4 and 13.1 t ha -1 ), whereas concentrations of 30 and 27%, also applied to soil and leaves were responsible, respectively, for the highest commercial root productivity (11 and 9.7 t ha -1 ).
