Les recherches actuelles sur la coopération au travail se nourrissent des innovations conceptuelles et théoriques qui ont vu le jour dans le domaine de l'étude des activités sociales de la cognition. Cet article tente de prendre la mesure de telles innovations. Il s'arrête en particulier sur les problématiques de l'« action située », de la « cognition distribuée » et de l'opérabilité des objets, dont il souligne à la fois l'intérêt et les difficultés. Il montre que la redécouverte de l'environnement et du contexte ne signifie pas qu'on ait cessé de « négliger la situation ».
Existe-t-il une quelconque continuité entre les différentes significations que le concept d'espace public revêt dans les divers domaines où il est utilisé en Sciences Sociales ? L'auteur tente de répondre à cette question en proposant, au-delà des théories régionales qui en font usage-théorie politique et analyse des « lieux publics »-une « anthropologie de l'espace public » sensible à la visibilité et à la scénarité de la vie sociale.
Cet article plaide pour le développement du paradigme communicationnel dans l'analyse sociale, y compris dans l'analyse de la communication sociale elle-même. Il tente de préciser la différence qu'un tel paradigme introduit dans l'approche des faits sociaux. Considérant que la conception prédominante de la communication, qui est représentationniste et cognitiviste, cède au mythe du donné et du déterminé-en-soi, l'auteur lui oppose un modèle intersubjectiviste et pragmatiste. Cet article engage ainsi le débat avec les auteurs qui proposent une théorie cognitive de la communication.
