Resumen which resulted in a critical reading of Chile's recent past.
Considering cultural studies in education
In March 2014, Turkish melodramas took Chilean TV screens, and thereafter Latin American screens, by storm. Since then, Chilean television has incorporated Turkish productions in its usual programming. Ten titles were broadcast during the first two years. Between 2014 and 2018, 40 melodramas were aired, and for the last two years they have occupied more screen time than fictions from any other country, including Chile. What are the reasons for the success of Turkish dramas in the Chilean context? What are the main challenges that Chilean and Turkish productions have been facing since the eruption of Turkish telenovelas? The methodology used in this research was that of a semi-structured interview which was conducted with 146 people in order to discover the reason for the appeal of Turkish telenovelas as compared with local melodramas that were broadcast at the same time. These interviews were used to build selection criteria for nine in-depth interviews. The results indicate that Turkish telenovela succeeded in Chile for various reasons. First, these telenovela produced an identification by contrast or opposition in the viewers due to the fact that the recognition of a distinct other affirms and assures one's own experience. Second, the novelty of showing places, characters, and stories that have not been seen before that were produced by an industry unknown to Chileans, resulted in the return of more classic dramas and narratives as well as melodrama aesthetic to the television screen. Third, the type of audiences of these programs grew and diversified thereby influencing Chilean programming. The results presented above suggest that telenovela must begin to utilize local characteristics more frequently in order to generate conditions for the global recognition of a Chilean production model.
AbstRAct Nowadays, Chilean television circulates stories that organize everyday life and normalize it by operating as social control mechanisms. Thus, the images presented propose social behavior patterns consistent with the hegemonic vision that prevails in the country. So we ask ourselves: What are the social models of "being a woman" shown in the stories circulating in the television? After the qualitative analysis of television programming, both of fiction and reality, proposed by the four channels with national coverage and the highest audience rating, we can affirm that gender roles presented on television, despite some nuances, are markedly traditional and place women in a place of subordination to men.
In this article, we analyze the social representations produced by the discourses of three current Chilean telenovelas and their contribution to the citizenship education of young people. From a qualitative and narratological perspective, the analyzed productions allow these audiences to self-identify with characters, problematize citizen issues based on the fictitious situations presented by these stories, use explanatory categories to solve the dilemma at hand, and critically analyze the stories, which are fundamental components of citizen education.
Abstract · The first city photographs taken in Chile, initially by foreign travelers, could be read as the spatial design of a sociopolitical strategy. The analysis proposed in this article tries to deal with the neutrality of the photographic technique by highlighting the priority of sight that captures and designs the object within the symbolic struggles of the Nation-state. In this regard, photography allows disseminating a flexible hegemony. Its staging proposes a visual and architectonical hierarchy in the illuminated and solemn territories where authority and values lie down. Modernization imposes new optical anatomies to a city that rises from the colonial past to receive progress with their work disciplines and aesthetic seductions. Keywords: Photography, City, Visuality, Space, Order.
