Este trabalho mostrará os primeiros resultados de uma pesquisa sobre as traduções dos romances de José Saramago para a língua inglesa. Em termos gerais, a pesquisa busca articular informações sobre a recepção das obras de Saramago nos países de língua inglesa e a intermediação realizada pelos tradutores nesse processo. Especificamente, este trabalho buscará relatar qual foi o espaço dado ao tradutor na grande repercussão das obras de Saramago em nível internacional, quais eram as relações do tradutor com o autor e como outras atividades e ocupações de Giovanni Pontiero se integravam à atividade de tradução.
Em situações muito tensas e conflituosas, tradutores, intérpretes e mediadores em geral são algumas vezes levados a suavizar os termos, ou o tom, ou qualquer outro aspecto de uma mensagem, por vários motivos. Algumas acepções do verbo "amortecer" em português são: tornar dormente; adormecer; entorpecer; ou ainda reduzir a intensidade de, perder intensidade; abrandar; afrouxar; enfraquecer; e também "acalmar; moderar [paixão, sentimento etc.]" (Houaiss, 2001).A interpretação é um campo em que esse ato de amortecer acontece com frequência, porque em situações de interpretação pode haver muitos elementos que contribuem para criar a possibilidade de um choque iminente. Entretanto, autores de traduções escritas muitas vezes também se veem por algum motivo levados a suavizar a rudeza de algumas palavras, usar cores menos vibrantes ao criarem um "quadro típico" de determinada cultura, ou até neutralizarem atitudes exaltadas de uma ou mais partes.Nessas situações, traduzir adequadamente significa muito mais do que traduzir com precisão ou ser fiel a um texto original. Em termos bem gerais, uma tradução adequada seria aquela que não agitasse ou estimulasse sentimentos de intolerância que pudessem levar a algum resultado violento. Também está em jogo o status profissional do tradutor, que, além de tentar não agravar uma situação tensa, está sendo julgado por sua competência, imparcialidade, neutralidade e honestidade.Mas o que realmente significa ser "neutro" nessas situações de conflito? Se a relação entre as partes é desigual, será que o tradutor deveria de alguma maneira tentar compensar essa desigualdade ou perpetuá-la? O tradutor tem o direito de interferir diretamente na situação, agindo como um defensor da parte mais fraca? Será possível para os tradutores não serem guiados por seus sentimentos, no caso de eles terem opiniões categóricas sobre algum aspecto relacionado àquela situação específica?Se as partes envolvidas precisam de um tradutor, isso provavelmente acontece porque elas não entendem a língua uma da outra, embora esse não seja sempre o caso.
