The dynamics of the polymer matrix in filled rubbers is modified by the presence of solid particles. We used low-field proton NMR to investigate model filled samples consisting of a dispersion of grafted silica particles into an elastomeric matrix. Exploiting magic-sandwich echo experiments, we were able to determine the fraction of polymer with slower dynamics and to correlate it to the silica specific surface. The presence of immobilized polymer;most probably due to a gradient of glass transition temperature around the solid particles;is detected whether there is a covalent bond between the filler and the matrix or not. Moreover, the fraction of immobilized polymer decreases in similar ways with either an increase of the temperature or the addition of solvent. In the case of covalent bonds between the silica and the polymer, multiple-quantum experiments reveal that the cross-link density of the elastomer matrix is locally increased in the vicinity of the particles. This is an observation that was not made in any conventional filled elastomer system and it can be attributed to the good particle dispersion and the covalent links in our model samples.

The slowing-down of the dynamics of a polymer chain near a surface has been observed for many years now. Here we show that the behavior of model nanocomposites can be quantitatively described with a gradient of glass-transition temperature. We describe with a single parameter-the range of this gradient-the temperature and solvent effect on the spin relaxation dynamics. Moreover, this parameter allows a quantitative description of the nanocomposite calorimetric response from the one of the bulk polymer.

A series of in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments are performed during the stretching of weakly and highly vulcanized carbon black (CB), silica and grafted silica filled natural rubber sample (NR). Conversely to literature, Mullins effect observed after one stretching cycle modifies the strain induced crystallization (SIC) behaviour of the sample. The onset of crystallization is ruled by the strain amplification induced by the filler presence. Moreover, fillers (CB and silica) behave as additional crosslinks into NR network, through fillererubber interactions that either accelerate or slow down the crystallization rate depending on NR matrix chemical crosslink density. This is consistent with the assumption that effective network density, which is due to chemical crosslinks, entanglements, and fillererubber interactions, controls the crystallization rate.

The nonlinear effect at small strains (Payne effect) has been investigated in the case of silica‐filled styrene‐butadiene rubber. The originality of this study lies in the careful preparation of samples in order to fix all parameters except one, that is, the modification of the silica surface by grafting silane (introduced at different concentrations) via reactive mixing. The organosilane can be either a coupling or a covering surface treatment with an octyl alkyl chain. A careful morphological investigation has been performed prior to mechanical characterization and silica dispersion was found to be the same whatever the type and the amount of silane. The increasing amount of covering agents was found to reduce the amplitude of the Payne effect. A similar decrease is observed for low coupling agent concentration. At higher concentrations, the evolution turns through an increase due to the contribution of the covalent bonds between the matrix and the silica acting as additional crosslinking. The discussion of the initial modulus was done in the frame of both the filler–filler and filler–polymer models. It is unfortunately not possible to distinguish both scenarios, because filler–filler and filler–matrix interactions are modified in the same manner by the grafting covering agent. On the other hand, the reversible decrease of the modulus versus strain (Payne effect) is interpreted in terms of debonding of the polymeric chains from the filler surface. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Adding fillers in elastomers is known to increase the elastic modulus and the wear resistance of elastomers, but also to increase nonlinear dissipation, a phenomenon known as the Payne effect. Indeed, when submitted to deformations of the order of a few per cents or more, the elastic modulus can decrease down to values much smaller than the initial one. On the other hand, when submitted to large amplitude oscillatory shear at a frequency ω, frequency analysis shows that the contribution of higher harmonics 3ω, 5ω, ..., to the response is quite small. This might appear somehow as a paradox since the nonlinear behavior of filled elastomers can be strongly marked. We discuss here in detail a possible physical origin of these various features. We do it by comparing experimental results performed on model elastomers to the prediction of a model proposed recently, based on the presence of glassy bridges linking neighboring particles. We show that the kinetics of rupture and rebirth of these glassy bridges can explain these effects.

We report on extensive femtosecond laser damage threshold measurements of optical materials in both bulk and thin-film form. This study, which is based on published and new data, involved simple oxide and fluoride films, composite films made from a mixture of two dielectric materials, metallic films, and the surfaces of various bulk materials: oxides, fluorides, semiconductors, and ionic crystals. The samples were tested in comparable conditions at 1030 nm, 375 to 600 fs, under single-pulse irradiation. A large number of different samples prepared by different deposition techniques have been tested, involving classical materials used in the fabrication of optical thin film components (Ag, AlF3, Al2O3, HfO2, MgF2, Nb2O5, Pt, Sc2O3, SiO2, Ta2O5, Y2O3, and ZrO2) and their combination with codeposition processes. Their behaviors are compared with the surfaces of bulk materials (Al2O3, BaF2, CaF2, Ge, KBr, LiF, MgF2, NaCl, Quartz, Si, ZnS, ZnSe, and different silica glasses). Tabulated values of results are presented and discussed.
