With the objective to evaluate the behavior of paracoccidioidomycosis in the last three decades, clinical and epidemiological data of 595 patients admitted to clinical services of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul from 1980 to 2009 were investigated. Gender, age distribution, clinical form, comorbidity with tuberculosis or AIDS, and mortality were compared by decades of clinical admission. It was shown that during the three decades there was a decrease in women percentage, and the same manner occurred a reduction in participants in the age group of 20 to 39 years. Moreover, the acute/subacute forms have been diminished in the period. These fluctuations are closely related and can be simultaneously analyzed. Increased AIDS co-infection prevalence from the first to the second decade was also revealed, coinciding with the appearance of the retroviral epidemic and stabilizing during the third decade. No change in the tuberculosis co-infection rate was observed (overall = 6.9%). It reinforces the importance of this co-morbidity. The overall mortality rate remained steady at 6.7%, not varying significantly from one decade to another. The persistent mortality rate calls attention to the importance of this neglected disease.
Resumo AbstractThe sanitary quality of 26 lots commercial seeds of tropical forages, produced in different regions (2004-05 and 2005-06) was analyzed. The lots were composed of seeds of Panicum maximum ('Massai', 'Mombaça' e 'Tanzânia') and stylo ('Estilosantes Campo Grande' -ECG). Additionally, seeds of two lots of P. maximum for exportation were analyzed. The blotter test was used, at 20ºC under alternating light and darkness in a 12 h photoperiod, for seven days. The Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Rhizopus genus consisted the secondary or saprophytes fungi (FSS) with greatest frequency in P. maximum lots. In general, there was low incidence of these fungus in the seeds. In relation to pathogenic fungi (FP),

Correlation between production of pure seeds and of disease intensity was not detected. With regard to the progress of honeydew in seeds of B. brizantha cvs. Marandu and Xaraes, observed the disease occurred in cold periods with high humidity. In cv. Marandu the path ogen occu rred in final phase of culture, while in cv. Xaraes the honeydew was detected in phase of intense bloom. Constant increases of disease intensity were observed in two genotypes. The honeydew occurred in 64% of panicles of cv. Marandu and in 81% of panicles of cv. Xaraes; about 20% and 18% of flowers/seeds, respectively, was affected. The results verified high positive correlation between the values of incidence and severity of disease.
