Background: Establishing a person's identity is a very important process in civil and criminal cases. Dental, fingerprint and DNA comparisons are probably the most common techniques allowing fast and secure identification processes. However, in certain circumstances related to the scene of the crime or due to lack of experienced personnel, these techniques might be unavailable; so there is still an increasing need for reliable alternative methods of establishing identity.
FDG uptake in primary ESFT reflected its metastatic potential and hence the aggressive behavior. The significant correlation between change in metabolic activity of the primary tumor and histopathological response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy suggests that FDG PET may be an ideal noninvasive method to assess tumor behavior and response to therapy in ESFT.
Background: Management of keloid is difficult as well as challenging. Intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) injections have remained a gold standard in non-surgical management of keloid. TAC is generally used in the concentration of 40mg/ml, which causes adverse effects such as local dermal atrophy and hypopigmentation. Aim was to study efficacy and adverse effects of TAC in treatment of keloid, in a lesser concentration of 20mg/ml.Methods: An open label study was conducted from November 2015 to May 2017 on 25 subjects of either gender, in the age group 11-55 years, at a medical college hospital. Intralesional injection TAC 20 was administered in the keloid at an interval of 3 weeks, for a total of 6 sessions, over a period of 18 weeks. Vancouver scar scale (VSS) was used to assess the improvement and SPSS 21 for statistical analysis. Results: Mean age of keloid subjects was 30.72 years and median duration of keloid was 8 months. The mean VSS score before treatment was 8.36 which reduced to 3.20 after treatment. Mean percentage change in VSS score was 62.79%, which was very highly significant (p <0.001). Physician’s assessment was ‘Very Good’ in 52.0% and ‘Excellent’ in 5 (20%). Adverse effect of atrophy was seen in 3 (12%), hypopigmentation in 11 (44%) and telangiectasia in 4 (16%).Conclusions: Intralesional injection triamcinolone acetonide 20mg/ml gives very good to excellent improvement in the majority of patients of keloid. Local adverse effects seen were hypopigmentation, atrophy and telengiectasia.
Pesticide-induced toxicity is a serious issue which has resulted in plethora of diseases all over the world. The organophosphate pesticide malathion has caused many incidents of poisoning such as cardiac manifestations. The present study was designed to evaluate the effect of Syzygium cumini on malathion-induced cardiotoxicity. Dose optimization of malathion and polyphenols such as curcumin, (−)-epicatechin, gallic acid, butylated hydroxyl toluene, etc. was done by MTT cell proliferation assay. Nuclear deformities, ROS production, and integrity of extra cellular matrix components were analyzed by different techniques. S. cumini methanolic pulp extract (MPE), a naturally derived gallic acid-enriched antioxidant was taken to study its effect on malathion-induced toxicity. Nuclear deformities, ROS production, and integrity of extra cellular matrix components were also analyzed. Twenty micrograms per milliliter LD50 dose of malathion was found to cause stress-mediated responses in H9C2 cell line. Among all the polyphenols, gallic acid showed the most significant protection against stress. Gallic acid-enriched methanolic S. cumini pulp extract (MPE) showed 59.76 % ± 0.05, 81.61 % ± 1.37, 73.33 % ± 1.33, 77.19 % ± 2.38 and 64.19 % ± 1.43 maximum inhibition for DPPH, ABTS, NO, H2O2 and superoxide ion, respectively, as compared to ethanolic pulp extract and aqueous pulp extract. Our study suggests that S. cumini MPE has the ability to protect against the malathion-mediated oxidative stress in cardiac myocytes.
Salivary duct carcinoma is a rare invasive malignancy arising in the ductal epithelium of the salivary glands. Nearly 85% of the cases occur in the parotid gland followed by submandibular gland. Rarely is it described in the hard palate. Salivary duct carcinomas affecting the minor salivary glands have been reported in only 4% of the SDC cases and constitute 2% of all the salivary gland malignant neoplasms. It is characterized by aggressive behavior with early metastasis, local recurrence and significant mortality. The tumor has predilection for older men in the 6th to 7th decades of life. In this article; we report a case of a salivary gland carcinoma which was present in the right posterior region of the maxilla of a 50 year old female patient. Aim: To evaluate and compare the antimicrobial properties of propolis and calcium hydroxide alone and in combination with ciprofloxacin and moxifloxacin against Enterococcus faecalis (E. Faecalis).
Materials and methods:The laboratory study was carried out to test the effectiveness of propolis and calcium hydroxidealone as well as in combination with the established endodontic medicaments (moxifloxacin and ciprofloxacin). The various combinations were-group 1: propolis, group 2: calcium hydroxide, group 3: moxifloxacin, group 4: ciprofloxacin, group 5: propolis + moxifloxacin, group 6: propolis + Ciprofloxacin, group 7: calcium hydroxide + ciprofloxacin, group 8: calcium hydroxide + moxifloxacin. The efficacy of these medicaments was tested by checking for the zone of inhibition for the specific strain (ATCC 29212) of E. faecalis at different time intervals, i.e. 24, 48 and 72 hours. Results: Mean zone of inhibition was maximum in group V (21.94 ± 4.26) followed by group VI (18.80 ± 1.93), group I (18.71 ± 4.26), group VIII (15.88 ± 2.59), group III (14.91 ± 1.00), group VII (14.57 ± 2.17), group IV (13.91 ± 1.00) and minimum in group II (12.89 ± 2.14). Mean zone of inhibition was found to be maximum at 72 hours and minimum at 24 hours. At all time intervals, the combination of Propalis with Moxiflocacin showed the maximum antimicrobial efficacy.
Conclusion:On the basis of the results of the present study, it can be concluded that propolis and calcium hydroxide show synergistic effect with moxifloxacin and ciprofloxacin against Clinical significance: Since propolis alone and in combination with antibiotics was observed to be more effective than calcium hydroxide, propolis can be considered as an intracanal medicament when compared to traditional calcium hydroxide
