Purpose -As a fundamental notion of transmitting civic responsibility with leadership, preparing service learning into the transformative experiential education aims to link classroom and community as an initiative in transforming civic responsibility among students. This paper aims to examine the insights of service learning to transmit the civic responsibility-based leadership.Design/methodology/approach -This paper builds on recent reviews on ethical engagement for service learning to underlie in performing civic responsibility. This literature review stage critically investigates service learning for contributing leadership-based civic responsibility. In-depth analysis from referred books, journals and conferences using keywords such as service learning and leadership-based civic responsibility was conducted. Meta-synthesis was conducted from findings by searching for information organized using substantive keywords.Findings -There are three core stages to understand and provide insight into the importance of civic responsibility-based leadership: strengthening commitment to work with a strategic plan in community engagement, nurturing creative thinking and professional skills with experiential leadership and enhancing leadership awareness with rational problem-solving. This study is supposed to contribute to the theoretical construction of civic responsibility with insights from service learning.Originality/value -Civic responsibility-based leadership is mainly seen as a comprehensive method of putting individual and societal basis in experiential learning. It aims to give insights to enhance the personal and social awareness to get involved in the community engagement by which to be the citizen with responsible essences.

Purpose This paper aims to explore service learning with its insights in empowering corporate responsibility awareness. Attempts to build corporate responsibility widely in incorporating into the sustainability engagement could be demonstrated in fostering the transformative experiential learning with extensive evaluation and reconfiguration of existing programs. The focus on enhancing the learning experience in emphasizing the community engagement would be applied with strengthening the actual performance in encompassing the ability raising awareness about the environmental issues. Design/methodology/approach The approach used in this paper refers to develop the conceptual framework about the service learning with various strategies to give insight on corporate social responsibility (CSR). Incorporating the approach of conceptualizing the basis of service learning, key consideration was generated into particular enhancement of service learning in contributing to the CSR. Findings The finding reveals that getting benefit to serving into the community engagement may take beneficial outcomes with its valuable insight to assist in the progress of program designed with associating to enhance corporate responsibility and sustainability awareness. The advancement of the social control among the companies would be deployed within empowering service learning for CSR where sustainability awareness-based community service as embodiment of CSR should be enhanced through nurturing corporate responsibility-based transformative experiential learning. Moreover, this initiative refers to an attempt to strengthen the basis of corporate responsibility and sustainability awareness-based experiential learning, which could enlarge creative thinking with envisioning sustainability and corporate responsibility. Originality/value This study is expected to contribute to the experiential learning to enhance the sustainability within the learning setting engaged in achieving what to contribute to the environmental concern. In creating the situation where the balance between serving and learning can be achieved, attempts to encourage them in joining the service learning program should be collaborated with orienting both personal and social community oriented comprehensively in underlying the responsibility awareness, the sustainability-based moral values. These aim to enhance the understanding stage about the care for protecting the environmental concern within learning experience with the goal to produce responsible awareness especially by economic agents such as shareholders, managers, regulators and active participants to promote sustainable benefits.

In the last decade, the reflective teaching practice has been considered to look at program and planning which should be taken into action. However, the digital era has shifted teaching practice from direct interaction to virtual one. It has challenges such as professional skills on online learning. This chapter aims at filling this gap by proposing the framework model on reflective teaching practice to pay special attention to professionalism and ethical essence in a way that can be taken seriously among the school holders. This chapter could enhance learning and professional development of teachers, which should be seen as a continuing process combining formal, non-formal, and informal learning so that students will have the chance to reflect in a direct way even though the educational practice is constituted in a special way in various settings.

Purpose-Reflections about fostering moral and spiritual qualities are the key point of view when considering the essence of religious beliefs in the theories about moral foundations. As a part of the spiritual values aimed at instructing human beings, mainly Muslims, tawakkul (trust in God) and tawhid (belief to God) are to be enhanced to situate the core religious foundation as the basic element for life at individual and social levels in the Muslim communities. This paper aims to critically examine tawakkul and tawhid to strengthening divine values as a foundation of self-regulation in religiosity.

In teacher education, action research has served as one of the tools for reflective practice to bridge the gap between the educational theories learned in the teacher training college and the actual pedagogical practice within the four walls of the classroom. In this descriptive and explorative research study, first the concept and characteristics of action research are outlined, supported by a discussion on action research types and models that are relevant to teacher training in Malaysia. Then, this paper explored the implementation of action research component in teacher education in Malaysia by first providing brief background information of action research in Malaysian teacher training institutes. Then, it discussed issues and challenges that are faced in terms of curriculum, teaching methods and objectives. The study also discussed the rationale for integrating action research component in teacher education programme. The result shows that the implementation of action research is hampered by the absence of exposure to action research in the earlier part of the training, the curriculum lacks practical input and the objectives set can be general and vague. It is recommended that action research workshops and trainings are conducted earlier in the training program and that more hands-on learning experience is introduced. Contribution/Originality: This article contributes to the existing literature by providing an overview of action research implementation in teacher education system in Malaysia. It discusses the issues and challenges that are faced by action research supervisors and trainee teachers. It also highlights the rationale for integrating action research component in teacher education curriculum.

Abstract-as an attempt to understand Modern Learning Environment (MLE) to support learning in big data era, its exploration where the students are engaged to access online resources using their mobile devices, laptop and other digital devices needs to understand MLE as the term integrated between digital technology tools and learning skills. The convenient facilitation has a whole section designed to support learning styles which can exactly create the learning environment to be modern. This paper aims to explore innovative design for MLE with big data approach to see the chance in applying this model for the construction to the design of big data based learning environments to facilitate online learning towards information and knowledge in higher education setting. The finding reveals to propose model reference to be implemented to improve student learning outcomes in a technology-rich teaching and learning environment in higher education. As a result, this paper is expected to contribute in the support with an initiative in the learning performance.

This paper discusses the speech acts in Facebook Status Updates posted by an apostate of Islam. The Facebook Timeline was observed for a duration of two years (January 2015 to December 2016). More than 4000 postings were made in the data collection period. However, only 648 postings are related to apostasy. The data were classified according to the types of speech acts. Expressive speech act is the most frequent speech act (33%, n=215), followed by the directive (27%, n=177), assertive (22%, n=141), and commissive (18%, n=115), respectively. Based on the speech acts used, it is discernible that the apostate attempts to engage other Facebook users and persuade them into accepting her ideology while gaining their support. This paper is novel in the sense that it puts forth the social actions of an apostate which is very scarce in literature. It is also methodologically innovative as it uses social media postings as a tool to explore the apostate’s social actions in an online space.

In facing a very challenging passage in time, Muslims need to possess a strong self-identity in order to progress together with the contemporary demands without sacrificing sacred religious values. Hence, this study aimed to explore Nursi's ideas related to the instilling of noble values as an element of self-identity. This qualitative study applied the content analysis method to achieve the objectives of the study. The findings showed that applying noble values is important in ensuring that the Islamic society continues to be relevant to its Islamic identity besides helping the country to maintain a level of inter-racial harmony. It also plays a role as an instrument for dakwah, especially for the non-Muslim community.
