We describe the controlled synthesis of dextran-coated superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) using a stable passively-driven capillary-based droplet reactor. High quality highly crystalline particles were obtained with a narrow size distribution of mean diameter 3.6 nm and standard deviation 0.8 nm. The particles were evaluated for use in MRI, and found to exhibit a large saturation magnetisation of 58 emu/g and a high T 2 relaxivity of 66 mM À1 s À1 at 4.7 T, signifying good MRI contrast enhancement properties.
ibstract. In a long-term experiment, soil physical properties were studied after 20 annual cycles of maizewheat-fodder cowpea cropping with annual application of inorganic fertilizers and farmyard manure (FYM). Weeds were controlled by hand or by the use of herbicides. The hand weeding treatment resulted in a lowering of the bulk density of the surface layer (&I5 cm) and a significant increase in the subsurface (15-30 cm) density. hpplication ofFYM significantly increased the soil organic carbon (OC), infiltration rate, water retention, aggregation and aggregate stability in water. Application of inorganic fertilizers had small but statistically significant effect in increasing soil OC.
A simplified procedure has been formulated and tested for determining average root length density (RLD) by auger sampling at a single site in wheat, corn and mustard. It involves the determination of horizontal root distribution in the representative half of the unit soil strip (distance from base of plant to mid-point in the rows) by excavating small monolith segments in the top soil layer. Average RLD is computed by dividing the integral of polynomial function fitted to the horizontal root distribution (in the unit soil strip) with its length. The average RLD, thus, obtained is interpolated on the curve between root length density and horizontal distance from the plant base (d) in the representative half of the unit soil strip. Root length density determined by centering 5 cm diameter auger at the interpolated d gave minimum deviation from the average RLD of that layer compared to the other possible single site sampling schemes with same-sized auger. These results indicate that for row crops, the best centre for single-site augering is about one-third of distance from the plant base to mid-way between the two rows.
