Abstract:The changes in molecular chemical structure of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), caused by doping PVA-PVP blend with cadmium chloride (CdCl 2 ), have been studied using UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, Fourier Transform Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The formation of cadmium nano-structures and microstructures in CdCl 2 doped PVA-PVP blend has been visualized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), in the range of doping levels varying from 0.5 wt% up to 10.2 wt% (doping level in weight percentage). The incorporation of dopant in PVA-PVP blend is confirmed using Energy Dispersive x-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). The optical absorbance (UV-Vis) spectra of PVA-PVP blend films doped with CdCl 2 from 0.5 wt% up to 2.2 wt%, showed a prominent absorption hump with peak at the wavelength 370 nm, in addition to other intermediate energy bands caused by the interactions of CdCl 2 with molecules of PVA and PVP. The photo-luminescence (emission/ fluorescence) spectra show significant quenching of fluorescence in CdCl 2 doped PVA-PVP blend films. Analysis of FTIR and Raman spectra suggest the possible modes of interaction of cadmium ions (Cd 2+ ) and chlorine ions (Cl -) with reactive functional groups (C-N, hydroxyl and carbonyl groups) of polymeric molecules in the blend. A reaction scheme for interaction of CdCl 2 with PVA-PVP blend is proposed, on the basis of spectroscopic studies on these films.

Abstract:Herein, we present preparation of solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) comprising of PEO, NaPF6 and varying fraction of Succinonitrile (SN) by standard solution cast technique. The morphological features and structural properties were studied by the FESEM, XRD, respectively. FTIR was performed to study the interactions between polymer host, salt, and SN. Impedance spectroscopy, Transference number measurements, LSV and CV were used to examine the electrochemical properties. The complex permittivity/conductivity & modulus were studied to understand the dielectric properties by evaluating the dielectric strength, relaxation time, hopping frequency and dc conductivity. Based on the experimental results an interaction mechanism is presented.

A solid polymer blend electrolyte system based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) complexed with NaClO 4 was prepared using solution cast technique. The structural properties of these electrolyte films were examined by X-ray diffractrometry (XRD) studies. The XRD data revealed that the amorphous domains of polymer blend matrix increased with increase of sodium salt concentration. The complexation of the salt with the polymer blend was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) studies. DC conductivity of the films was measured in the temperature range 303-398 K. The electrical conductivity increased with increasing dopant concentration, which is attributed to the formation of charge transfer complexes. The electrolyte exhibited the highest room temperature conductivity 2.41× 10 −6 S cm −1 at 30 % of NaClO 4 salt concentration. The polymer complexes exhibited Arrhenius-type dependence of conductivity with temperature. In the temperature range studied, two regions with different activation energies were observed. Electrochemical cells of configuration Na/(PVA+ PEG+NaClO 4 )/(I 2 +C+electrolyte) were fabricated and the discharge characteristics of these cells were studied under a constant load of 100 K. Several cell parameters associated with the cells were evaluated and compared with earlier reports. UV-VIS absorption spectra in wavelength region 200-600 nm were used to evaluate the optical properties like direct band gap, indirect band gap and absorption edge. The optical band gaps decreased with increasing sodium ion concentration. This suggests that NaClO 4 is a good dopant to improve the electrical properties of PVA + PEG polymer blend electrolytes.
