Numerous spruce budworm, Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.), moths were observed and trapped in western Newfoundland between 8 and 17 July 1982. At that time about 91% of the native Newfoundland budworm population was in the 5th and 6th instars and less than 1% had pupated. Spruce budworm moths probably emigrated with the aid of suitable weather from New Brunswick to Newfoundland.

En?. 108: 601-608 (1976) Life cycles of Perisrenus pallipes (Curtis) and P . pseudopallipes (Loan), parasitoids of the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (P. de B . ) , were investigated in an alfalfa field and in uncut weeds in the Ste. Anne de Bellevue area. In 1972, P . pallipes adults emerged in mid-May and P . pseudopallipes adults emerged in late July. The incidence of parasitism in nymphal and adult stages of the tarnished plant bug, L. lineolaris, was measured. The population of the tarnished plant bug in the weeds was more heavily parasitized than the one in the alfalfa field. The ichneumonid hyperparasite Mesochorus curvulus Thomson was also found in this area.

The common June beetle, Phyllophaga anxia (LeConte), is an indigenous pest of agricultural crops in North America (Hammond 1948; Ritcher 1949). A bionomic study and survey for natural enemies of P. anxia was conducted in southern Quebec from 1975 to 1977. Pasture soils were searched for immature stages of P. anxia, and any natural enemies found in situ were collected. A prepupa and pupae of Pelecinus polyturator (Drury) were found in the pasture on several occasions. Previously, P. polyturator had been reported as a parasite of grubs of Phyllophaga spp. (Davis 1919; Petch and Hammond 1925, 1926; Brues 1928; Hammond 1944), and its distribution ranges from Canada to Argentina (Masner 1979).

This note deals with European Orthotylini species Pseudoloxops coccineus (Meyer) now known to occur in Canada. It was first discovered in Ontario 20 years ago, and is now reported for the first time. Additional distributional records are given for a European Mirini, Camptozygum aequale (Villers), first reported from the Nearctic region by Wheeler and Henry (1973). The two species were probably introduced accidentally into this country with nursery stock importations of Fraxinus excelsior and Pinus sylvestris, respectively.Identifications were confirmed by comparison with named European specimens. Both species are redescribed and illustrated.

This chapter focuses on mountain ash sawfly (Pristiphora geniculata) attacking mountain ash (Sorbus americana) in Canada, and provides an overview of the endoparasitoid Olesicampe geniculatae that has been released for its management, and the evaluation of effectiveness of this biological control agent. Future research prospects are recommended.

Development of P. pallipes, from egg to emerged larva, in the tarnished plant bug lasts 24.49 ± 2.38 days at 25 °C/16 h and 20 °C/8 h and 77 ± 5% R.H. with 16 h illumination.Eggs of P. pseudopallipes need 72–96 h to hatch under the above-cited regime. At least three distinct larval stages can be recognized without special staining procedures. The first instar larva is a caudate-mandibulate type. The second larval stage is acaudate and lives in the host haemocoele. The third larval stage is also acaudate and emerges from the host. The pupa is an exarate type diapausing in a cocoon. P. pseudopallipes is an arrhenotokous species. The longevity of the adults in the laboratory is about 16 days. The adult oviposits into the host abdomen.Survival of diapausing pupae is better at 16 h photophase than at 8 h photophase.
