OLESICAMPE GENICULATAE, A NEW PALAEARCTIC ICHNEUMONID PARASITE OF PRISTIPHORA GENICULATA (HYMENOPTERA: TENTHREDINIDAE)

Abstract: This note deals with European Orthotylini species Pseudoloxops coccineus (Meyer) now known to occur in Canada. It was first discovered in Ontario 20 years ago, and is now reported for the first time. Additional distributional records are given for a European Mirini, Camptozygum aequale (Villers), first reported from the Nearctic region by Wheeler and Henry (1973). The two species were probably introduced accidentally into this country with nursery stock importations of Fraxinus excelsior and Pinus sylvestris, … Show more

“…Schneid., grown as ornamentals (Clark et al 1974). A host-specific and solitary endoparasitoid, Olesicampe geniculatae Quednau and Lim, was successfully established in Quebec following introductions from its native Europe during 1976Europe during -1978 (Quednau and Lim 1983;Quednau 1990). Olesicampe geniculatae prefers to attack the first-and second-instar larvae of its univoltine host which is killed only just prior to pupation in the spring.…”

“…wasp, Olesicampe benefactor Hinz. For control of the mountain ash sawfly in Canada, the Commonwealth Institute of Biological Control (CIBC) in DelCmont, Switzerland, has selected another European host-specific Olesicampe species, recently described as 0. geniculatae (Quednau and Lim 1983), as the most efficient natural enemy for introduction. Both 0. benefactor and 0. geniculatae are internal solitary larval parasites (Pschorn-Walcher and Zinnert 1971), and both are host-specific.…”

“…The incubation period of the parasite egg is short. The embryo is fully formed inside the egg the 4th day after oviposition at 21°C (Quednau and Lim 1983). Olesicampe geniculatae remains in the first larval instar while the host insect is still feeding and enters the second and third larval instar shortly before cocoon formation of the host.…”
