This paper describes the taxonomy, geographical distribution, biology, phenology and voltinism, diapause, ecology and population dynamics of C. cerasi. In Europe, the pear‐slug is a pest of secondary importance with cherry as principal host plant. Outbreaks occur at irregular intervals. In the beginning of an outbreak in the Alsace the species was mainly bivoltine, with a small univoltine intermediate generation, but there occurred a gradual shift in the course of the gradation towards a predominance of the intermediate generation, and also a shift from deuterotokous to thelytokous parthenogenesis. Climate and weather could not be shown to have a marked effect on the population dynamics of C. cerasi. Larval and cocoon parasitism were often important mortality factors and are considered as an efficient regulating mechanism, whilst egg parasitism was unimportant. There are indications that other, most likely intrinsic factors also contribute to the break‐down of outbreaks, because a high mortality due to unknown causes was observed in the larval and eonymphal stages in the retrogradation phase of an outbreak.
