In contrast to yeast or mammalian counterpart, BiP (Binding Protein) from several plant species, such as maize, tobacco, Arabidopsis and soybean, is encoded by a multigene family. A systematic characterization and analysis of soybean BiP expression have provided evidence for the existence of multiple, complex regulatory mechanisms controlling plant BiP gene expression. In support of this observation, the soybean BiP gene family has been shown to exhibit organ-specific expression and differential regulation in response to abiotic stresses through distinct signaling pathways. As a member of the stress-regulated HSP70 family of protein, the elucidation of plant BiP function and regulation is likely to lead do new strategies to enhance crop tolerance to environmental stress. Consistent with this observation, transgenic plants overexpressing soybean BiP have demonstrated to exhibit increased tolerance to ER (endoplasmic reticulum) stressors during seed germination and enhanced tolerance to water deficit during plant growth.
The municipality of Mossoró, RN, Northeastern Brazil, is featured on goat rearing. Toxoplasmosis is a zoonosis which is more pathogenic for goats when compared with other animals for slaughter. In this species, the protozoan is often responsible for reproductive problems and economic losses. In order to identify the seroprevalence and risk factors of toxoplasmosis in goats of farms in this municipality, serum samples from 338 animals (320 females and 18 males) of 15 production units were tested by enzyme immunoassay (ELI-SA). Of the 15 farms, 14 had animals positive for Toxoplasma gondii, and in these the total number of seropositive animals were 125 (123 females and 2 males), yielding a prevalence of 37.0%. There was a significant relationship (p<0.05) between prevalence and sex, and between the prevalence and breed of animals. The most important risk factors associated with T. gondii infection were: water supply with odds ratio (OR=2.635), containers for water animals located outside the premises of property (OR=3.121) and the exploitation of dairy type (OR=2.546). For the analysis of the avidity ELISA, was found females of reproductive age in the acute phase of infection.
This study characterizes the allelopathic effect in the germination of Allium cepa seeds, and toxic on the species Artemia salina, of aqueous extracts of leaves of Aspidosperma pyrifolium and Combretum leprosum and the constituent phytochemical compositions. For this, Allium cepa seeds were germinated in systems containing aqueous extracts (200, 400 and 800 mg.L-1) and distilled water, to evaluate aspects of germination, mitotic phases, mitotic index and limit value of cytotoxicity. The toxicity of the aqueous extracts was evaluated in Artemia salina. The extracts were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively when the substances present to define the phytochemical profile. The aqueous extract of A. pyrifolium negatively affects the germination process in the hypocotyl and seedling growth at 800 mg.L-1. The LC50 found for the aqueous extract of A. pyrifolium was 4986 mg.L-1. The effect of C. leprosum extract on germination resulted in an increase in the dry matter of the root at 400 mg.L-1 and in the density of the dry matter of the root at 800 mg.L-1. In addition, it reduces the seedling matter at 200 mg.L-1, corresponding to the trend observed in the mitotic index, in which this concentration presented a sublethal score for the limit value of cytotoxicity. The maximum concentration evaluated was not sufficient to determine an LC50 in A. salina. The phytochemical profiles of both species demonstrated classes of substances with potential pharmacological application. This information is important because these species are commonly used as food for farm animals and for purposes in folk medicine.
Alguns trabalhos
