EVALUATION OF BANANA GENOTYPES IN THE LOW SÃO FRANCISCO RIVER BASIN, SERGIPE, BRAZILABSTRACT-The main objective of this work was evaluated the performance of twenty genotypes of Musa sp., in the environmental conditions of the Low São Francisco River Basin, Propriá, SE, and Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications and three useful plants per parcel. rowth and yield characteristics were analyzed during the first and second production cycles. Hybrids PV42-53, PV42-68, PV42-85 and FHIA-02 because of the bigger production and greater weight of the fruit, should be recommended for culture in the region. Hybrid FHIA-18 presented excellent agronomic characteristics, being an alternative to 'Prata Anã'. The hybrids Ambrosia and Buccaneer can be an alternative for Cavendish bananas, by showing great bunches and similar flavor. Hybrid YB42-07 could be an option for areas of 'Silk' banana culture in the region of the Low São Francisco River, having potential to be set up as cultivar.
Physicochemical characteristics of Barbados cherry influenced by fruit maturation stageAbstract This work aimed at evaluating changes in physical and chemical characteristics of Barbados cherry fruits in three maturation stages. Fruits from two genetic sources (UFRPE 7 and UFRPE 8) were used during the dry and wet seasons in a commercial orchard. The experimental design was a completely randomized block with factorial scheme 2 x 3 (source plants x fruit maturation stages) and three replicates. Levels of vitamin C and of total soluble solids (TSS) besides pH and fruit weight and diameters were evaluated. Genotypes UFRPE 7 and UFRPE 8 produced fruits containing levels of vitamin C appropriated to the internal and external markets. Immature fruits showed levels of vitamin C significantly higher than mature and semi-mature ones. Those fruits could be used in the pharmaceutic industry. Seasonal influence on levels of vitamin C, physical (fruit weight and diameter) and physicochemical (TSS) characteristics were found. Higher levels of vitamin C were observed during the dry season. These contents decreased during the fruit ripening. UFRPE 7 produced the best quality fruits and presented higher stability in most of the characteristics evaluated.
ABSTRACTThe objective of this study was to determine the most favorable conditions for the in vitro germination of mangaba seeds and initial development of plantlets. After asepsis, emerging seeds of mature fruits were inoculated in tubes contend the next treatments: T1-15 mL of MS culture medium; T2-15 mL of MS culture medium + 2.0 g L-1 of activated charcoal; T3-15 mL of ½ MS culture medium; and T4-15 mL of ½ MS culture medium + 2.0 g L-1 of activated charcoal. All the culture medium were gellified with 0.3 g L-1 of Phytagel® and supplemented with 3.0 g L-1 of sucrose. The statistical design was completely randomized with four treatments, eight repetitions and ten seeds by experimental unit. There was not significant difference of the treatments for the germination percentage at twenty days, which varied from 95 to 100%. The ½ MS with 2.0 g L-1 of activated charcoal promoted higher growth the main root when compared with the others treatments. After 50 days, abnormal plantlets were not observed and neither significant difference were verified among the length of the aerial part. However, the dilution in 50% of the MS culture medium associate to the presence of activated charcoal induced higher growth of the main root (8.50 cm) when compared with MS culture medium in the presence (6.19 cm) or absence (6.00 cm) of activated charcoal.
