L’essor du numérique, les perspectives de croissance faible, la montée des préoccupations environnementales constituent autant de conditions favorables au développement des comportements collaboratifs qui, cependant, ne déterminent pas mécaniquement les pratiques. L’enquête auprès de conducteurs de Blablacar , tous actifs, appartenant aux catégories moyennes et supérieures, montre qu’au cours de leur socialisation, ils ont construit une disposition ascétique et une disposition à être économe, une compétence à échanger ou un goût pour la sociabilité plus ou moins fortement constituées. C’est à un moment d’incertitude sociale, de fragilisation du statut social, de ruptures biographiques que les plus âgés s’engagent dans la pratique. À l’occasion d’un nouveau trajet de longue distance, et après avoir envisagé d’autres choix modaux, des conducteurs souvent jeunes, dans une situation d’insécurité sociale et de faible confiance en l’avenir, recourent au covoiturage, sans appétence particulière pour les échanges avec des inconnus. Chez des conducteurs en reprise d’étude plus âgés (d’environ 40 ans), la disposition à faire des économies se conjugue avec un goût pour les échanges et la sociabilité.
