Agronomic characterization of banana mutants obtained by gamma radiation Abstract Banana is one of the most economically important fruit, explored almost exclusively by small producers as a continuous source of food and income. Although Brazil is one of the main banana producers, the national banana production is undergoing serious problems especially in the phases of production and post-harvest limiting its participation in the international market. One of the main factors leading to great production losses is the toppling over due to the tall height of plants of main commercial cultivars. A strategy to solve this problem is reducing height by inducing mutation. The objective of the present work was to characterize irradiated Prata type banana mutants (cvs. Pacovan and Preciosa) during two production cycles in order to select short plants in height with good agronomic characteristics. In vitro plants of both cultivars were irradiated with gamma rays in the doses of 20 Gy (´Pacovan´, 200 plants) and 30 Gy (´Preciosa´, 200 plants) subcultivated four times and afterwards evaluated in the field during two production cycles. Four possible mutants were selected from each cultivar with height smaller than the average height of the controls after two evaluation cycles. It was observed that some of these mutants presented greater precocity and bunch weight compared to the controls. From the results obtained it is possible to select mutant plants with super...
Wood drying is one of various stages in the carbonization process, therefore proper monitoring is key to improving yield and obtaining quality charcoal. Prior to being subjected to carbonization by charcoal production plants and once trees have been felled, logs are piled up by the roadside or close to carbonization furnaces and left air drying for 90 days until an optimal 30% moisture content is reached. This work aims to evaluate air drying of logs from an Eucalyptus urophylla clone for carbonization use, analyzing moisture reduction over time and also the influence of log diameter and bark. Logs with and without bark were used, 6.0cm to 21.0cm in diameter, 3.60m in length, with average basic density of 0.496 g/cm 3 , obtained from a commercial stand of Eucalyptus urophylla at age 8 years. Air drying log piles were arranged outdoors in Paraopeba, Minas Gerais State, Brazil and monitoring consisted of periodic log weighing for a period of 80 days. At the end of the experiment, higher rates of moisture loss were observed in the three initial weeks. Moisture in logs without bark (54%) and with bark (50%) was close after 80 drying days, with a higher level of moisture reduction being observed for logs without bark. Bark influence on moisture loss was more pronounced in the first three weeks. Moisture reduction varied in intensity as a function of log diameter. After 80 days, the highest level of moisture reduction was observed in logs without bark: 65% for logs larger in diameter and 80% for logs smaller in diameter. As regards logs with bark, results were 56% and 75% respectively.Key words: Charcoal, log piles, moisture content.
In air drying of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs for the production of charcoal it is necessary to be able to predict when logs have reached the required moisture content of ≤ 35%. This study is aimed to produce models using basic density and diameter to predict the moisture content of Eucalyptus urophylla and Corymbia citriodora logs after 30, 60 and 90 days drying. 1,2 m long logs were taken at three different heights from three C. citriodora trees and three trees each from two E. urophylla clones (VM4 and Mn463). The 27 debarked, end sealed logs were air dried under cover for 90 days during which the change in moisture content was monitored. The relationship between density and drying was analyzed by Pearson's correlation coefficient and the models for predicting the moisture content based on the basic density and diameter were produced. The density and the drying showed a high correlation coefficient. The coefficient of determination of the models was above 0,89 with a standard error lower than 6%. The use of the density and diameter to estimate the wood moisture content simplifies the production of the models, which can be used for Eucalyptus and Corymbia genetic materials.
AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of radial position and final carbonization temperature on the chemical, physical and mechanical properties of charcoal from wood of Corymbia and Eucalyptus. Three individuals of Corymbia citriodora and two natural hybrids of Eucalyptus urophylla (VM04 and MN463) were cut. One short piece was removed from each individual and it was mechanically processed, so that the samples were removed at three different radial positions for the determination of basic density and for carbonization at three different final temperatures. Charcoal from C. citriodora had higher apparent relative density; mineral content; penetration resistance of the semi-sphere of steel and maximun tension supported. There is a direct relationship between final carbonization temperature and the contents of fixed carbon, resistance and charcoal stiffness. There was an increasing trend in apparent relative density, penetration resistance of the semi-sphere and charcoal maximun tension supported from the pith to the cambium. There was still a tendency towards a higher mineral content for the charcoal produced with the wood closest to the pith.
This paper aimed to study the permeability to air and liquid, in the longitudinal direction of "amapá" wood (Brosimum parinarioides Ducke), originating from the Amazon Forest. Furthermore, the influence of anatomical and chemical characteristics in the permeability of the wood was investigated. For this study, samples were collected from three trees, in the state of Pará, Brazil, and submitted to permeability test, anatomical characterization, and chemical analyses. The permeability to the air of the "amapá" wood was estimated at 63.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the flow of air and water in Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus dunnii wood. Wood was collected from four trees aged 37 years in an experimental plantation of the Federal University of Lavras, Brazil. Planks were cut off the basal logs to produce specimens for air and water permeability testing. Results indicated that the longitudinal permeability to air and water of E. grandis wood were, on average, 5% and 10% higher, respectively, than that of E. dunnii wood. E. grandis and E. dunnii wood showed neither air nor water flow in the test for permeability transversal to the fibers, and longitudinal permeability to air exceeded that to water by approximately 50 fold in both species.
