Mandibular fractures are common facial lesions typically treated with titanium plate and screw systems; nevertheless, this material is associated with secondary effects. Absorbable material for implants is an alternative to titanium, but there are also problems such as incomplete screw insertion and screw breakage due to high pretension in the screw caused by the insertion torque. The purpose of this paper is to find the optimal screw pretension (SP) in absorbable plate and screw systems by means of artificial neural network (ANN) and its inverse (ANNi). This optimal SP must satisfy a desired maximum von Mises strain (MVMS). For training the ANN, a database was generated by means of a design of experiments (DOE). Each DOE configuration was solved by means of finite element method (FEM) calculations. To obtain the optimal value for (SP) in the mini absorbable screw for fracture fixation, a strategy to invert the ANN is developed. Using the ANN coefficients, a sensitive study was performed to identify the influence of the design parameters in the MVMS. The optimal SP obtained was 14.9742 N. The MVMS condition was satisfied with an error less than 1.1% in comparison with FEM and ANN results. The screw shaft length is the most influencing MVMS parameter.
A crow search algorithm (CSA) was applied to perform the optimization of a running blade prosthetics (RBP) made of composite materials like carbon fibre layers and cores of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS). Optimization aims to increase the RBP displacement limited by the Tsai-Wu failure criterion. Both displacement and the Tsai-Wu criterion are predicted using artificial neural networks (ANN) trained with a database constructed from finite element method (FEM) simulations. Three different cases are optimized varying the carbon fibre layers orientations: –45°/45°, 0°/90°, and a case with the two-fibre layer orientations intercalated. Five geometric parameters and a number of carbon fibre layers are selected as design parameters. A sensitivity analysis is performed using the Garzon equation. The best balance between displacement and failure criterion was found with fibre layers oriented at 0°/90°. The optimal candidate with –45°/45° orientation presents higher displacement; however, the Tsai-Wu criterion was less than 0.5 and not suitable for RBP design. The case with intercalated fibres presented a minimal displacement being the stiffer RBP design. The damage concentrates mostly in the zone that contacts the ground. The sensitivity study found that the number of layers and width were the most important design parameters.
In this paper we present the implementation of a system based on organic Rankine cycle coupled to a heat discharge of an industrial process. Waste heat is used as an energy source input to the system, which uses this energy to evaporate an organic fluid and expand it in a turbine, where mechanical power is produced. The system consists of 4 processes and the heat exchanger is specially analyzed. According to the availability of heat energy, the heat exchanger was designed to achieve the maximum efficiency in the energy system. Likewise, the maximum thermal efficiency of the ORC system is calculated as a function of the available energy, the energy source temperature and the available mass flow rate. By these calculations, the working fluid and the suitable operating conditions were selected through a thermodynamic analysis.
In this article, particle image velocimetry studies were conducted in a low-speed wind tunnel to investigate the effects of blowing ratio and blade span in terms of the characteristics of the flow field around a film-cooled blade leading edge. The measurements were performed at 20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% of blade span and blowing ratios of M = 0.5, M = 0.75, M = 1, M = 1.5, and M = 2. Velocity, turbulence intensity, and structure of vortices during the interaction between cooling flow and mainstream were analyzed in detail. The analysis shows a significant increase in mainstream velocity at low blowing ratios, M \ 1. Peaks of turbulence were observed at low-and high-span locations. Aerodynamical losses are expected at higher blowing ratios due to the formation of secondary vortices near the outgoing jet. These vortices were a consequence of velocity gradients at this zone.
