This paper presents concept mapping as a way to encourage deep learning, which approximates students and the teacher's expert knowledge. The ability to provide accurate and constant feedback throughout the teaching-learning process justifies the use of concept maps in higher education. The mastery of the concept mapping technique and the careful planning of the demand to be presented in the classroom are critical to ensure the expected results. Keywords: Concept Maps; Higher Education; Deep Learning; Learning Evaluation; Lifelong Learning; Metalearning.
The proper use of the technique in the classroom depends on training students. This study aimed to assess and track students' proficiency from the structural analysis of the Cmap propositional network. We proposed the use of Structural Analysis of 434 Cmaps collected during the Natural Science Course (NSC) at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities during 1 st , 5 th and 15 th classes. Statistical univariate and multivariate data analysis let us infer that the propositional density and the quantity of initial and final multiple concepts are both useful parameters to assess the students' proficiency in the mapping technique, which was established throughout training, and Cmap elaboration tasks during the fifteen classes.
In this paper, we explore the use of concept maps (Cmaps) as instructional materials prepared by teachers, to foster the understanding of chemistry. We choose fireworks as a macroscopic event to teach basic chemical principles related to the Bohr atomic model and matter–energy interaction. During teachers' Cmap navigation, students can experience a sense of disorientation, which is detrimental to the learning process. Two graphical cues were tested as Cmap navigation guidance: (1) colour-coded concepts, to group similar content and (2) numbered propositions to offer a reading sequence. A quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test design combined with mental effort was utilized to measure the efficiency of Cmaps in learning. First-year undergraduate students (n= 85) were randomly assigned to study one of four possible Cmaps. The results showed that all students were able to increase their level of factual knowledge, despite the Cmap being used as an instructional material. The lack of cues impaired conceptual understanding. Signalling similar content using colours was critical to reduce the invested mental effort and foster understanding about chemical concepts.
