The optical and electrical characterization of nanostructures is crucial for all applications in nanophotonics. Particularly important is the knowledge of the optical near-field distribution for the design of future photonic devices. A common method to determine optical near-fields is scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) which is slow and might distort the near-field. Here, we present a technique that permits sensing indirectly the infrared near-field in GaAs nanowires via its second-harmonic generated (SHG) signal utilizing a nonscanning far-field microscope. Using an incident light of 820 nm and the very short mean free path (16 nm) of the SHG signal in GaAs, we demonstrate a fast surface sensitive imaging technique without using a SNOM. We observe periodic intensity patterns in untapered and tapered GaAs nanowires that are attributed to the fundamental mode of a guided wave modulating the Mie-scattered incident light. The periodicity of the interferences permits to accurately determine the nanowires' radii by just using optical microscopy, i.e., without requiring electron microscopy.

We demonstrate the synthesis as well as the optical characterization of core-shell nanowires. The wires consist of a potassium niobate (KNbO3) core and a gold shell. The nonlinear optical properties of the core are combined with the plasmonic resonance of the shell and offer an enhanced optical signal in the near infrared spectral range. We compare two different functionalization schemes of the core material prior to the shell growth process: silanization and polyelectrolyte. We show that the latter leads to a smoother and complete core-shell nanostructure and an easier-to-use synthesis process. A Mie-theory based theoretical approach is presented to model the enhanced second-harmonic generated (SHG) signal of the core-shell wires, illustrating the influence of the fabrication-induced varying geometrical factors of wire radius and shell thickness. A spectroscopic measurement on a core-shell nanowire shows a strong localized surface plasmon resonance close to 900 nm, which matches with the SHG resonance obtained from nonlinear optical experiments with the same nanowire. According to the simulation, this corresponds to a wire radius of 35 nm and a shell thickness of 7.5 nm. By comparing SHG signals measured from an uncoated nanowire and the coated one, we obtain a 250 times enhancement factor. This is less than the calculated enhancement, which considers a cylindrical nanowire with a perfectly smooth shell. Thus, we explain this discrepancy mainly with the roughness of the synthesized gold shell.

We synthesized nano-scaled periodic ripple patterns on silicon and titanium dioxide (TiO2) surfaces by xenon ion irradiation, and performed adsorption experiments with human plasma fibrinogen (HPF) on such surfaces as a function of the ripple wavelength. Atomic force microscopy showed the adsorption of HPF in mostly globular conformation on crystalline and amorphous flat Si surfaces as well as on nano-structured Si with long ripple wavelengths. For short ripple wavelengths the proteins seem to adsorb in a stretched formation and align across or along the ripples. In contrast to that, the proteins adsorb in a globular assembly on flat and long-wavelength rippled TiO2, but no adsorbed proteins could be observed on TiO2 with short ripple wavelengths due to a decrease of the adsorption energy caused by surface curvature. Consequently, the adsorption behavior of HPF can be tuned on biomedically interesting materials by introducing a nano-sized morphology while not modifying the stoichiometry/chemistry.

A proximity-effect model for the niobium electrode is presented assuming on the barrier side the existence of a thin surface layer which differs from the other part of the niobium electrode. The resulting dependence of the quasiparticle current-voltage characteristic on temperature and electrode thickness shows good agreement with experimental results.Unter der Annahme einer Oberfliichenschicht auf der Niobelektrode, die sich vom darunterliegenden Material unterscheidet, wird ein Proximityeffekt-Mode11 zur Beschreibung der Niobelektrode vorgestellt. Die damit erhaltenen Abhangigkeiten der Quasiteilchen-Strom-Spannungskennlinie von der Temperatur und der Elektrodendicke stimmen gut mit experimentellen Ergebnissen uberein.

A systematic theoretical treatment of the influence of barrier impurities with short‐range potentials on electron tunneling near resonance energy through insulating layers is presented in the realistic three‐dimensional case. The comparison with the usual one‐dimensional model exhibits differences with respect to the dependence on tunneling direction and the broadening of impurity states. In particular, an evaluation of the resonance tunneling contribution is given for barrier impurities described by a screened charge potential.
