Bien avant d'être au centre du débat suscité au siècle dernier par le projet de Mer intérieure saharienne, le problème de la localisation libyenne du lac Tritonis (ou Tritônitis) avait partagé les auteurs anciens eux-mêmes. Associé le plus souvent à la légende des Argonautes ou au culte d'une déesse indigène assimilée à Pallas, la baie ou le lac du Triton semblait appartenir à une géographie mythique plus qu'à la réalité. Toujours est-il qu'au gré des traditions géographiques grecques, plusieurs localisations étaient possibles et ce flottement a persisté jusqu'à l'époque romaine. Pour les uns (comme Strabon), l'hydronyme se trouvait d'abord en Cyrénaïque avant d'avoir été transféré — à tort — dans l'Extrême Occident avec le jardin des Hespérides. Pour d'autres, suivant une tradition représentée par Hérodote, l'emplacement du Triton devait être, comme l'a souligné Gsell, dans le golfe de Gabès. Mais les incohérences du « Pseudo-Scylax » ont donné à hésiter entre la côte du Byzacium et la Petite Syrte, tandis que, pour Pline influencé par deux traditions différentes, le Triton erre « entre les deux Syrtes ». Seul, finalement, Mêla (et peut-être Ptolémée) assigne au Triton une position intérieure qui peut correspondre à celle des grands chotts actuels, déjà sans communication avec la mer dans l'Antiquité. Cette vaste sebkha a reçu au demeurant divers autres noms dans l'Antiquité et au Moyen Age : au Lacus Salinarum d'Orose et au « passage difficile » (täkmert) des auteurs arabes, il faut ajouter désormais le nom libyco-berbère de MADD gravé sur le rocher de Kriz dans la dédicace à Silvain Mercure, protecteur des voyageurs qui traversaient le chott el Jérid. Madd — « lac » en libyque — était devenu le nom du chott el Jérid à l'époque romaine (Madd(en)s(is) lacus). L'hydronyme est formé sur la séquence consonantique md (m ou n, d tendu, géminé ou simple, signifiant des mots « lac », « marais », « mare » dans l'Antiquité et au Moyen Age, comme le montrent les lieux-dits Medd, Agelt Nmadi, Tamuda, Ager Tendi, Anda, Timida.

L'auteur étudie, dans le cadre de ce bassin situé à une soixantaine de kilomètres de Carthage, les relations qui existaient entre les paysages agraires antiques et la centuriation du Nord tunisien. Dans la première partie, il montre, à l'aide de cartes, de photographies aériennes et de relevés archéologiques, que le parcellaire régulier couvrait 48 centuries, que les lots allaient de un heredium à quatre heredia, qu'ils étaient limités par des ruisseaux, des murettes ou marqués par le défoncement de la croûte calcaire sous-jacente. La seconde partie est consacrée à la confrontation du cadastre antique et de diverses variables : les parcelles régulières n'existent que sur les pentes de 3 à 10 % ; elles occupent seulement des sols rouges, peu profonds, limoneux, bien structurés, bien drainés, reposant sur une croûte calcaire ; les enclos portaient des plantes annuelles aussi bien que des vignes, des oliviers ou des arbres fruitiers. La houe et l'araire simple ont été les principaux instruments de mise en valeur de terrains qui ne connaissaient pas de véritable irrigation ; les exploitations, de dimension moyenne, pouvaient être détenues par des possessores indépendants, mais aussi par des colons inclus dans un grand domaine. Dans la troisième partie, J. Peyras avance que le parcellaire régulier et dense issu de la centuriation nord que nous avons sous les yeux n'est pas un fragment de celui qui existait dans l'Antiquité. Il correspond à ce qui a été mis en place au lendemain de la conquête romaine. Par contre, les dépressions marécageuses, la réserve du Fundus Aufidianus et, peut-être, une part des lots irréguliers, n'ont été réellement cultivées qu'à partir de la 2e moitié du IIe siècle de notre ère. Les exploitants de cette époque ont négligé la trame ancienne et ont organisé le terrain à leur guise. Il faut donc mettre en évidence deux grands moments dans la constitution des paysages agraires antiques : 1) La formation d'un agrosystème basé sur la complémentarité des montagnes, des versants et des plaines. Il est créé par une société agropastorale dès le néolithique. Le parcellaire régulier républicain s'insère dans ce système sans le bouleverser. 2) L'occupation de toutes les terres disponibles aux IIe et IIIe siècles ap. J.-C. Elle correspond à l'urbanisation, à l'autonomie municipale, au grand réseau routier. Chemin faisant, l'auteur est amené à réexaminer diverses questions, en particulier celles qui concernent le Fundus Aufidianus et les populi leiberi de la lex agraria de 111 av. J.-C.
Le fragment épigraphique CIL Vili, 12552C Les ethniques faisaient partie du tableau annexé au tarif fiscal de Carthage promulgué dans les années 370. Les Ululenses (proches d'Ucculal), Uccunnenses (= Ucculenses, d'Uccula, Hr. Douirat), Vazaritani (de Vazari, Hr. Bajar), Zamenses (de Zama Minor, Ain Zamit ou Zamat), Zuforenses (de Zufor(a), Hr. Zofouir) appartenaient à une région fiscale qui se confondait, selon l'auteur, avec la vallée ou le bassin de l'oued Tine, dans le Tell septentrional tunisien. El-Bekri, la deuxième guerre punique et la Confédération Cirtéenne Un passage d'el-Bekri (Kitâb al-Masâlik, 138-139), éclairé par d'autres phrases du même auteur, doit être confronté à différents documents antiques : sources se rapportant à la Confédération de Cirta, Punica d'Appien, Itinéraires antiques, inscription du fundus Aufidianus, actes conciliaires, ainsi qu'à la linguistique berbère et à la toponymie actuelle. Il permet d'avancer que 'Anda se confondait avec Άνδα, ville du IIIe siècle av. J.-C, à situer sur le Henchir el Handa, dans les Béjoua orientaux ; que Dama pouvait être la Zarn(a) de 646 et qu'elle était proche de Jbel Abiod ; que Balta, ancienne Beltà ou Biltha, se trouvait dans le bassin de la Medjerda ou celui du Tine ; que Zana, qu'il faut rechercher dans le massif de l'Edough, n'était autre que Ζάνα de Ptolémée et, peut-être, la Diana (actuellement Deinia) proche de Tuniza, signalée par l'Itinéraire d'Antonin et le Géographe de Ravenne. L'auteur accepte l'affirmation du géographe alexandrin suivant laquelle Ζάνα et Ούάγα étaient des villes des Cirtéens, sur des critères historiques, géographiques et onomastiques.
Dans cette première étude sur les géomètres perfectissimes de l'Empire romain tardif, l'auteur s'efforce de mettre en lumière le rôle de ces hauts fonctionnaires et de déterminer la période de leur activité. Placés à un niveau élevé de la hiérarchie équestre, ils ont parfois été qualifiés de "Togati Augustorum", titre qui n'a aucune relation avec celui ď auocatus fisci du Haut-Empire. Garants du droit en matière d'arpentage ("auctores"), proches des empereurs qui ne dédaignent pas de couvrir directement leurs écrits de leur autorité, autant hommes de terrain que chefs de bureaux et que chargés d'enseignement, ils se sont vu confier des régions dans un cadre administratif régulier ou des missions spéciales en divers lieux, des Tétrarques à la dynastie valentino-théodosienne, et, plus particulièrement, de Constantin à Arcadius. L'auteur envisage principalement les textes qui font allusion à l'Afrique du Nord : une page des auctores Vitalis et Arcadius ; des "litterae singulares" ; le "Per Gallias" et "per Africam" de Faustus et Valerius et un autre passage de ces fonctionnaires.
