Despite a range of literary and archaeological evidence for the importance of forests in Roman Africa, these marginal lands and their marginalised populations have been almost entirely ignored or downplayed by modern scholarship, leading to tortured interpretations of a range of material. This article asks two questions, one historical, the other historiographic: what role did the forests of Africa Proconsularis play in the economies and productive imaginaries of the region's inhabitants? And why have the products, labour and labourers of sylvan industries been largely written out of modern accounts? After drawing together evidence and proxies for the centrality of Africa's pine forests to a range of lifeways, cultural practices and economies — including their fundamental (and overlooked) role in providing the pitch that lined the exported amphorae that drove North Africa's economic boom — I argue that French colonial practices around forests led to their erasure from histories of Roman Africa.

Saccharides and their derivatives as corrosion inhibitors for aluminum pigmentsin aqueous media 6. Miiller und M. KurfeB* Aluminiumpigmente (Al-Gehalt > 99,5%) unterliegen in waiRrigen, leicht alkalischen Metalliclacken der Korrosion, deren zeitlicher Verlauf sich durch volumetrische Bestimmung des entstehenden Wasserstoffs leicht verfolgen 1aRt. Als einfachc Modellsysteme zur Prufung von Mono-, Di-und Polysacchariden, sowie Derivaten davon, als Korrosionsinhibitoren wurden zwei WasserIButylglykol-Gemische gewahlt, deren pH-Wert zur Beschleunigung der Korrosionsreaktion auf 10 eingestellt wurde. Daruber hinaus wurde versucht , durch Vergleich mit geeigneten Modellsubstanzen Struktur-Wirkungs-Beziehungen aufzustellen. Zwei Substanzklassen enviesen sich als wirksam: 1. Reduzierend wirkende Mono-und Disaccharide inhibieren die Korrosion wahrscheinlich uber das im Gleichgewicht vorliegende Endiolstukturelement. 2. Die untersuchten Hydroxycarbonsauren bilden vermutlich Chelatkomplexe, die dann korrosionsinhibierend wirken .Als wirksamster aller hier untersuchten Inhibitoren zeigte sich das stark reduzierend wirkende Endiol Ascorbinsaure.Aluminum pigments (Al-content >99,5%) were corroded in aqueous, slightly alkaline metallic coating compositions. The temporal progress of the corrosion can be determined easily by volumetric analysis of the evolved hydrogen. As simple model systems for testing mono-, di-and polysaccharides and their derivatives as corrosion inhibitors two waterlbutyl glycol-mixtures were chosen the pH of which was elevated to 10 to accelerate the corrosion reaction. In addition it was tried to establish structureefficiency-relations by comparison with model compounds. Two classes of compounds were active: 1. Reducing mono-and disaccharides were inhibiting the corrosion reaction presumably by their in the equilibrium existing endiol structure element. 2. The examined hydroxycarboxylic acids are forming chelate complexes which seem to be the corrosion inhibitors.The most effective of all tested compounds was the strong reducing agent ascorbic acid.
