The psychological impact of the announcement of a fetal abnormality after ultrasound examinations is examined in relation to the building up of the mother-child attachment. It represents the "psychological cost" of such techniques. Understanding the subjective experience of the patients could increase the effectiveness of clinical practice. We have assumed that the relationship between parents and professionals is a critical element that contributes to the establishment of an emotional link between the mother and her child. Pregnant women, mothers, and professionals were approached for interviews and by questionnaires including anamnestic data, opinions, and projective methods. The results showed that the women with fetopathy were less centered on themselves during the pregnancy. Long-term effects were found to be important. In pregnant women, ultrasound examination was experienced with satisfaction even if some ambivalence remained. In mothers with an impaired child, ultrasound examination was viewed as a technique with low reliability. Professionals reported not having preparation in making such an announcement. We concluded that a need exists for better management of the modalities of ultrasound examinations. Many parents have expressed their need for psychological support.

Facial expression processing and the attribution of facial emotions to a context were investigated in adults with Down syndrome (DS) in two experiments. Their performances were compared with those of a child control group matched for receptive vocabulary. The ability to process faces without emotional content was controlled for, and no differences appeared between the two groups. Specific impairments were found in the DS group according to the task modalities and the type of facial emotional expressions. In the emotion matching condition, the DS adults showed overall difficulties whereas in the identification and recognition conditions they were particularly impaired when processing the neutral expression. In the emotion attribution task, they exhibited difficulties with the sad expression only and the analysis of their error pattern revealed that they rarely selected this expression throughout the task. The sad emotion was the only one that showed a significant relationship with the facial expression processing tasks.

The present study aims to assess how the processing of basic visual perceptual (VP) components (length, surface, orientation, and position) develops in typically developing (TD) children (n = 215, 4-14 years old) and adults (n = 20, 20-25 years old), and in children with cerebral palsy (CP) (n = 86, 5-14 years old) using the first four subtests of the Battery for the Evaluation of Visual Perceptual and Spatial processing in children. Experiment 1 showed that these four basic VP processes follow distinct developmental trajectories in typical development. Experiment 2 revealed that children with CP present global and persistent deficits for the processing of basic VP components when compared with TD children matched on chronological age and nonverbal reasoning abilities.
