The period of rapid development of the T.G.V. in France has seen the production of a large variety of new or altered stations, and for which a typology is here proposed. The stakes of these stations have not always been understood or put to good use, and the analysis of eight different forms of stations located in the urban tissue, or in its close proximity, underlines how accessibility to the city remains a major asset for rail transport. The current pause in the high-speed rail building programme should thus help in better developing the "network effect", by further associating the high-speed system to the "ordinary" railway, and also by coming nearer to the cities. Maximizing the largest number of connections with other lines, with urban transport and with airports would seem to be indispensable.
