Comparison of methods for the evaluation of adaptability and stability for yield in cotton genotypesAbstract -The objective of this work was to compare different methods used to estimate adaptability and stability of 17 cotton genotypes evaluated in 23 locations of the Brazilian savannah. Genotype and environment effects and genotype x environment interaction were significant. According to ecovalence and AMMI models, cultivar BRS Cedro showed the best stability. Varieties Delta Penta and BRS Ipê were among the most unstable genotypes, but not among the most productive. Using the methods of Eberhart & Russel, Lin & Binns and Annicchiarico, genotypes BRS 269 -Buriti, FMT 701 and CNPA GO 2001-999 were the most stable and among the five most productive on average. The evaluation of the specific adaptabilities provided by the AMMI analysis is of great importance in the study of the behavior of genotypes. The amount of information generated and the facilities of interpretation favors Lin & Binns method, which can be complemented by an AMMI analysis.Index terms: Gossypium hirsutum, AMMI analysis, assesment of cultivars, ecovalence, genotype x environment interaction.
GROWTH AND FOLIAR ANATOMY OF Mikania glomerata Sprengel ("GUACO") PLANTS SUBMITTED TO DIFFERENT PHOTOPERIODABSTRACT -Mikania glomerata Sprengel, an important medicinal species, popularly known as "guaco", "coração de Jesus", "guaco liso", "guaco cheiroso", "cipó caatinga" and "erva de cobra" was investigated. The photoperiods of 8, 12, 16 and 20 hours were studied. After 90 days' treatment; total dry matter weight, partitioned (among leaves, branches and roots), leaf area, leaf area ratio, leaf weight ratio and specific leaf area were determined. The plants growth changed with photoperiod there was an increase in the total and partitioned dry matter up to 16 hours followed by a fall when photoperiod was increased from 16 to 20 hours. Leaf area and number of leaves have been growing till the 20-hours photoperiod. There was a reduction of the specific leaf area and leaf area ratio with the increase of photoperiod. Concerning leaf weight ratio, there was also a decrease when photoperiod was from 8 to 16 hours, however, when photoperiod was from 16 to 20 hours, there was a trend toward increase. The treatments effect on the thickening of leaf tissue was observed. The photoperiod had positive result in the characteristics associated with growth, foliar anatomy and photosynthetic as: total biomass production, leaf area, leaf number, partitioned biomass to several plant organs. INDEX TERMS:Mikania glomerata, anatomy, photoperiod, medicinal plant.
Cotton stalk regrowth must be controlled after harvest to ensure the phytosanitary quality and sustainability of cotton farming systems. Mechanical destruction generally does not conform to the no-tillage system, and the control of cotton stalk regrowth by herbicides is little studied in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of herbicides to control glyphosate-resistant transgenic cotton stalk regrowth. The study was conducted in three environments of the Brazilian Cerrado region, two in Santa Helena de Goiás (SHGO), during 2013 and 2014, and one in Luís Eduardo Magalhães (LEM-BA) in 2014. In each of the three environments, the experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block with four replications. Each experiment consisted of different combinations of herbicides and one untreated control. Cotton stalk regrowth was influenced by the three environments. Two sequential 2,4-D amine applications, each with 1,000 g ha-1 of acid equivalent, resulted in better cotton stalk destruction, albeit with 4.9, 16.9 and 36.9% of cotton stalk regrowth in SHGO 2013 and 2014, and LEM-BA 2014, respectively. A single application of 2,4-D amine and a 2,4-D amine spraying followed by the application of carfentrazone-ethyl, paraquat, saflufenacil, paraquat + diuron or glufosinate-ammonium are not effective to control glyphosate-resistant transgenic cotton stalk regrowth. The best destruction of cotton stalk regrowth occurs with two sequential applications of 2,4-D amine.
The augmented block design is widely used in breeding programs, with non-replicated treatments generally being selection units, and replicated treatments being standard cultivars. Originally, an intrablock analysis (fixed model) was proposed. Although non-replicated treatments and/or blocks can be considered of random nature, mixed linear models could be used instead. This work evaluated such an approach, using computer simulation. Populations consisted of sets of randomly generated inbred lines. Molecular marker data were also simulated to allow the estimation of the genetic covariance matrix. Different conditions were considered, varying heritability and the coefficient b of Smith of soil heterogeneity. For each condition 100 simulations were performed, considering four linear models, varying respectively the nature of the effects of blocks and non-replicated treatments (fixed - F, or random - R): FF, FR, RF and RR. In relation to FF, the mixed models were more efficient under low to intermediate heritability and high b. Mixed models could improve inference in breeding programs using the augmented block design and the choice of the model should rely on the kind of selection. If this is truncated, the RF model should be preferred; if it is not, then the RR model would be more suitable.
