Soybean seed treatment with insecticides and biostimulantAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effects of seed treatment with insecticides and biostimulant on soybean germination and plant and root growth. Two experiments were performed in complete randomized blocks, in which seeds were treated with aldicarb, thiamethoxan, imidacloprid and two checks: one without treatment and one treated with biostimulant. The experimental units at the laboratory were germination sheet rolls with soybean seeds. Plantlet vigor, germination, normal and abnormal plantlets, root and hypocotyl lengths were evaluated. For the greenhouse study PVC pots with 16 dm -3 were used, and determinations were made for: N, P and K contents; dry matter yield; root length, surface and radius; N, P and K uptake effi ciency; and root growth rate. Soybean treatments with insecticides and biostimulant led to thinner roots formation, which characterizes plant regulator-like effects. The product aldicarb used in dose applied affects the vigor and germination of seeds. Seed treatment with insecticides and biostimulant does not increase root and plant growth in soybean.
We conducted a field experiment to determine whether application of biosolids (municipal sewage sludge) to degraded areas of the Brazilian Atlantic rainforest had the potential to contaminate native forest species with trace metals in the sandy soils of the region. Treatments consisted of 0, 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 dry Mg biosolids ha −1 , with nine native pioneer, secondary, and climax tree species assessed for metal uptake: capixingui, aroeira-pimenteria, canafístula, cedro-rosa, mutamba, angico-vermelho, copaíba, jatobá, and jequitibá. Biosolid application did not have a statistically significant effect on metal concentrations in soil, and Cd was the only metal with increased availability. No increased metal uptake was seen in tree foliage sampled at 6 and 12 months after application. Additional longerterm study is recommended; however, the results of this study indicate biosolids could be used in Atlantic rainforest reclamation in degraded sandy soils with little impact on soil accumulation and tree uptake of trace metals.
Cotton stalk regrowth must be controlled after harvest to ensure the phytosanitary quality and sustainability of cotton farming systems. Mechanical destruction generally does not conform to the no-tillage system, and the control of cotton stalk regrowth by herbicides is little studied in Brazil. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of herbicides to control glyphosate-resistant transgenic cotton stalk regrowth. The study was conducted in three environments of the Brazilian Cerrado region, two in Santa Helena de Goiás (SHGO), during 2013 and 2014, and one in Luís Eduardo Magalhães (LEM-BA) in 2014. In each of the three environments, the experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block with four replications. Each experiment consisted of different combinations of herbicides and one untreated control. Cotton stalk regrowth was influenced by the three environments. Two sequential 2,4-D amine applications, each with 1,000 g ha-1 of acid equivalent, resulted in better cotton stalk destruction, albeit with 4.9, 16.9 and 36.9% of cotton stalk regrowth in SHGO 2013 and 2014, and LEM-BA 2014, respectively. A single application of 2,4-D amine and a 2,4-D amine spraying followed by the application of carfentrazone-ethyl, paraquat, saflufenacil, paraquat + diuron or glufosinate-ammonium are not effective to control glyphosate-resistant transgenic cotton stalk regrowth. The best destruction of cotton stalk regrowth occurs with two sequential applications of 2,4-D amine.
ABSTRACT TIP PRUNING, PLANT DENSITY AND PLASTIC MULCHING IN TOMATO YIELD IN PROTECTED CULTIVATIONThe aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of two combinations between plant density and tip pruning height, associated to the use of plastic mulching, on plants development and fruit yield of the tomato (Duradoro hybrid) grown under protected environment. Two single stem cultivation systems were compared: SC1 -tip pruning after the fifth inflorescence with 20,000 plants ha -1 ; SC2 -tip pruning after the second inflorescence with 50,000 plants ha -1 , and three different soil cover conditions: bare soil, white polyethylene film, 50 mm-thick, and black polyethylene film, 50 mm-thick. The experimental design used was randomized block, in a split plot array. The work was carried out from June to November of 2003, at the UNESP, Ilha Solteira (São Paulo State, Brazil). The treatment SC2 increased plant height at 45 days after the transplant, and reached higher number and fruit yield, with reduction in cropping period. The soil cover with polyethylene mulching did not affect the yield of this crop.
shows that the variability for this trait is low even for cultivars with different genetic backgrounds.
