INFLUENCE OF SEED SIZE ON PHYSIOLOGICAL SEED QUALITY AND SOYBEAN YIELDABSTRACT -Seed size has received special attention by researchers, who have studied aspects related to seed performance and the resulting plant. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effects of seed size on initial plant growth, grain yield and the physiological seed quality of soybeans by testing seeds of three cultivars (BRSMG 752S, BRSMG 790A and BRSMG 750SRR), graded into three sizes (4.0 mm, 5.0 mm and 6.0 mm). No-till planting was done on December 6 th , 2007 and the plants thinned 21 days after emergence to 13 plants per meter. Harvesting and seed threshing were done manually on April 11 th , 2008. After harvesting, seeds were manually graded into three sizes by using round perforation screens of 6.0 mm, 6.5 mm and 7.0 mm. The field trials were set up in a 9
-The objective was to assess the early treatment effect of soybean seeds and pre-sowing with different combinations of chemicals on the establishment of plants and crop yield performance. The design was in randomized blocks in a 2x7 factorial arrangement, with two times for seed treatment and seven treatments (six chemical treatments and an untreated control). The treatments were: 1) fipronil + pyraclostrobin + thiophanate methyl; 2) imidacloprid + thiodicarb + carbendazin + thiram; 3) abamectin + thiamethoxam + fludioxonil + mefenoxam + thiabendazole; 4) carbendazin + thiram; 5) fludioxonil + mefenoxam + thiabendazole; 6) carboxin + thiram; and 7) untreated control (water only). The assessments were: seedling emergence, final stand, plant height and insertion of first pod, number of pods per plant, seeds per pod and per plant, thousand-seed weight and grain yield. Early treatment of soybean seeds (240 days prior to sowing) hinders the establishment of the crop, the thousand-seed weight and grain yield in relation to the pre-sowing treatment. Chemical treatments tested containing fungicides and insecticides associated favor the establishment of the crop, but do not alter the soybean yield performance.
PRE-HARVEST DESICCATION: EFFECTS ON THE PHYSIOLOGICAL QUALITY OF SOYBEAN SEEDABSTRACT -Temperature fluctuations associated with high rainfall and the oscillating relative humidity of the air during the pre-harvest stages of seed maturation may result in losses in physical and physiological quality and also in seed health. Pre-harvest desiccant application helps to reduces seed exposure to unfavourable climate conditions and reduce seed vigor and germination. The object of this research was to determine the effects of the application period of desiccants and of early harvesting on soybean seed quality. The experiments were conducted in Alto Garças, MT, with the 2 Eng. Agr., Dra, Pesquisadora da EMPAER/MT,
BackgroundDue to the climate change of the past few decades, some agricultural areas in the world are now experiencing new climatic extremes. For soybean, high temperatures and drought stress can potentially lead to the “green seed problem”, which is characterized by chlorophyll retention in mature seeds and is associated with lower oil and seed quality, thus negatively impacting the production of soybean seeds.ResultsHere we show that heat and drought stress result in a “mild” stay-green phenotype and impaired expression of the STAY-GREEN 1 and STAY-GREEN 2 (D1, D2), PHEOPHORBIDASE 2 (PPH2) and NON-YELLOW COLORING 1 (NYC1_1) genes in soybean seeds of a susceptible soybean cultivar. We suggest that the higher expression of these genes in fully mature seeds of a tolerant cultivar allows these seeds to cope with stressful conditions and complete chlorophyll degradation.ConclusionsThe gene expression results obtained in this study represent a significant advance in understanding chlorophyll retention in mature soybean seeds produced under stressful conditions. This will open new research possibilities towards finding molecular markers for breeding programs to produce cultivars which are less susceptible to chlorophyll retention under the hot and dry climate conditions which are increasingly common in the largest soybean production areas of the world.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12870-016-0729-0) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
-The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different spray volumes, via industrial treatment, on the physiological quality of soybean seeds with different levels of vigor. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x5 factor scheme, with four replications. Factors consisted in two levels of seed vigor (high and low) and five spray volumes (0, 600, 1200, 1800 and 2400 mL. 100 kg -1 ). Products used to obtain the volumes were: fungicide (carbendazin + thiram); insecticide (imidacloprid + thiodicarb); nematicide (abamectin); micronutrients (cobalt, molybdenum and zinc); polymer (peridiam); biostimulants (kinetin + gibberellic acid) and inoculum (Bradyrhizobium japonicum). The used cultivars were BRS 360 RR and BRS 1010 IPRO. The physiological seed quality was determined by the following evaluations: germination, first count of the germination test, seedling emergence in sand, emergency speed index, total length of shoot and root of the seedlings. In the different spray volumes, high vigor soybean seeds have higher physiological quality than low vigor seeds. The increased spray volumes in seed treatments reduce the physiological quality of low vigor soybean seeds.
-Storage is an important step in the production of soybean seeds, mainly in tropical regions, where high temperatures can drastically reduce seed quality. The storage at cooler temperatures may be a feasible alternative to preserve seed quality during storage. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of soybean seeds artificially cooled by a dynamic process and stored in an environment, with non controlled temperature and relativity humidity. Two seed lots of cultivars Monsoy 8757, TMG 115 RR and BRS Valiosa RR were used. After processing and during packaging the seeds were cooled to 18 o C by a dynamic process. Seed samples were collected after 0, 60 and 120 days of storage, using the following parameters germination, accelerated aging, seedling emergence in sand, speed of emergence index, electrical conductivity, tetrazolium and seed health. Although soybean seeds artificially cooled by the dynamic method may have slightly superior performance in maintaining physiological quality during storage in non-refrigerated warehouse, for lots of high physiological quality, these advantages are not observed.
GREEN SOYBEAN SEED AND EFFECTS ON ITS PHYSIOLOGICAL POTENTIALABSTRACT -Soybean seed, mainly from the state of Mato Grosso, savannah (cerrado) region, has presented cotyledons with partial degradation of chlorophyll. The consequence of this phenomenon has been the discard of many seed lots, as result of their low quality. This study was developed with the objective of investigating the influence played by chlorophyll, over the physiological quality of soybean seed. Two commercial seed lots (A and B) of the cultivar MG/ BR46-Conquista, early maturing cycle, with 11,8% and 37,4% of green seeds, respectively were segmented into three samples: original seed, green seed and yellow seed. Each sample composed one treatment. Seed quality evaluation was determined by the germination test, accelerated aging (24 hours), tetrazolium test, seedling and radicle length, weight of a thousand seeds, electric conductivity, field emergence, all test performed at the time of planting. Green seed presented lower germination, viability and vigor, and a lower level of uniformity between the seedlings, a faster rate of deterioration, higher quantity of leachate, shorter plant length, lower one thousand seed weight, and a lower germination capacity in the field, independent of the quantity of the percentage of cotyledons with green pigmentation. However these losses were higher in the lot with 37.4% green seed. It can be concluded that chlorophyll is an indication of reduction of the physiological potential in soybean seeds.
