The role of organic acids in aluminum (Al) tolerance has been the object of intensive research. In the present work, we evaluated the roles of organic acid exudation and concentrations at the root tip on Al tolerance of soybean. Exposing soybean seedlings to Al3+ activities up to 4.7 &mgr;M in solution led to different degrees of restriction of primary root elongation. Al tolerance among genotypes was associated with citrate accumulation and excretion into the external media. Citrate and malate efflux increased in all genotypes during the first 6 h of Al exposure, but only citrate efflux in Al-tolerant genotypes was sustained for an extended period. Tolerance to Al was correlated with the concentration of citrate in root tips of 8 genotypes with a range of Al sensitivities (r2=0.75). The fluorescent stain lumogallion indicated that more Al accumulated in root tips of the Al-sensitive genotype Young than the Al-tolerant genotype PI 416937, suggesting that the sustained release of citrate from roots of the tolerant genotype was involved in Al exclusion. The initial stimulation of citrate and malate excretion and accumulation in the tip of all genotypes suggested the involvement of additional tolerance mechanisms. The experiments included an examination of Al effects on lateral root elongation. Extension of lateral roots was more sensitive to Al than that of tap roots, and lateral root tips accumulated more Al and had lower levels of citrate.
SUMMARYMorphologically differentiated Spodosols usually occur in the Coastal Plain of the South of Bahia and North of Espírito Santo. They are found in profiles known as "muçungas", i.e. sandy soils that accumulate water. In these areas, two kinds of Spodosols, different from those in the Restinga area, can be found: Spodosols with E albic horizon (white muçunungas) and without this horizon (black muçunungas). Eight soil profiles with spodic characteristics were collected and described in order to evaluate differences in the formation process of Barreiras and Restinga Spodosols in the South of Bahia. The soil profiles were also characterized chemically, physically and mineralogically. Additionally, texture and chemical analysis, Fe and Al extraction by sodium dithionite-citrate-bicarbonate (DBC), acid ammonium oxalate and sodium pyrophosphate, ammonium oxalate extract optic density (DOox), sulphuric acid attack, and X ray difractometry of the clay fraction were performed. In the Spodosols of the Barreiras area, fragipan was found the spodic layers. Cemented B spodic horizon were observed in the white muçunungas, and granular structure and dark color from the surface in the black muçunungas. There was no fragipan or hard spodic horizon in the Restinga Spodosol. This soil is acid, dystrophic and alic, with sandy texture and high clay percentages in the spodic horizons. The CEC, based on H + Al, is predominantly represented by the organic matter. The most representative components of the mineral phase of the clay fraction are kaolinite and possibly vermiculite traces with interlayered hydroxy.
The use of phosphate-solubilizing fungi is a promising biotechnological strategy in the management of phosphorus (P) fertilization, as it enables the utilization of rock phosphates (RP) or the recovery of P fixed in soil particles. The objective of our study was to evaluate fungal isolates for mechanisms of solubilization of P-bearing compounds, such as AlPO 4 , FePO 4 , Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , Araxá RP, and Catalão RP. Four fungal isolates obtained from Brazilian soils were characterized in liquid media: Aspergillus niger FS1, Penicillium canescens FS23, Eupenicillium ludwigii FS27, and Penicillium islandicum FS30. A. niger FS1 was the only isolate able to solubilize all of the P sources, solubilizing 71, 36, 100, and 14 % of the P from AlPO 4 , FePO 4 , Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , and RPs, respectively. Medium acidification was an effective solubilization mechanism, particularly for Ca 3 (PO 4 ) 2 . The other P sources were mainly solubilized through organic acids produced by the fungi. Oxalic acid, produced exclusively by A. niger FS1, and citric acid were decisive factors in the solubilization of AlPO 4 and FePO 4 . Penicillium isolates produced more gluconic acid than A. niger FS1 in all treatments. However, this higher production did not result in higher solubilization for any of the P sources, showing that gluconic acid contributes little to the solubilization of the P sources evaluated. The higher capacity of medium acidification and the production of organic acids with stronger metal-complexation activity are characteristics that confer to A. niger FS1 a wider action on insoluble P sources. Consequently, this isolate qualifies as a promising candidate for application in the management of P fertilization.
The simultaneous release of various chemical elements with inhibitory potential for phosphate solubilization from rock phosphate (RP) was studied in this work. Al, B, Ba, Ca, F, Fe, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Rb, Si, Sr, V, Zn, and Zr were released concomitantly with P during the solubilization of Araxá RP (Brazil), but only F showed inhibitory effects on the process at the concentrations detected in the growth medium. Besides P solubilization, fluoride decreased fungal growth, citric acid production, and medium acidification by Aspergillus niger. At the maximum concentration found during Araxá RP solubilization (22.9 mg F(-) per liter), fluoride decreased P solubilization by 55%. These findings show that fluoride negatively affects RP solubilization by A. niger through its inhibitory action on the fungal metabolism. Given that fluoride is a common component of RPs, the data presented here suggest that most of the microbial RP solubilization systems studied so far were probably operated under suboptimal conditions.
PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Amazônia Ocidental, mudanças de uso da terra, Brachiaria brizantha cv Marandu , abundância natural do 13 C. Impact of forest-pasture conversion on stocks and dynamics of soil carbon and humic substances in the Amazon ABSTRACTThis study evaluates the impacts of converting natural Amazonian forests in Brazil to pasture dominated by Brachiaria brizantha concerning to C dynamics and humic fractions in two soil chronosequences in the Acre State, Brazil. The first site, dominated by Plinthic Red Yellow Argissols (Ultisols), is located in the municipality of Rio Branco and comprises an area of bamboo-and palm-dominated open forest with two B. brizantha pastures of 3 and 10 years old. The second site, dominated by a dystrophic Red Yellow Latosol (Oxisol), is located in the municipality of Senador Guiomard and comprises an area of dense forest and a 20-year old B. brizantha pasture. In each site soil samples were collected in triplicate at depths of 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-40 cm. Samples were evaluated for physical and chemical characteristics, C of humic substances and light organic matter, and the isotopic composition of soil and its organic fractions to 1 m depth, determining the percentage of C derived of both grassland and forest. There were increases in stocks of soil C and δ 13 C soil with the time of grazing in both sites. The percentage of C derived from pasture was much higher in the surface layer of the Senador Guio...
