James J. Gibson, the founder of ecological psychology, introduced a radical empiricist approach to perception and action centered on direct perception in naturalistic environments that was counter to popular representational views of his time. This direct perception approach and the associated introduction of the affordance concept have been extremely influential in several fields of study. However, since its inception, the affordance concept has evolved in a manner such that it now deviates significantly from Gibson’s original intention. This review follows use of the affordance concept by four sets of influential experimental psychologists: Gibson, Donald Norman, Mike Tucker and Rob Ellis, and Daniel Bub and Michael Masson. Particular attention is paid to the manner in which they applied the concept and the contributions provided by each set of researchers. The primary goal of this review is to determine what cognitive psychologists can take away from developments within the field and what considerations should be taken into account when using the term affordance. Having a more thorough understanding of the factors that led to the concept of affordance and its recent reformulations will better equip cognitive psychologists and, by extension, human factors researchers to further advance the study of perception–action relations.

The “Internet of things” (IoT) refers to Internet-enabled technologies designed to increase the efficiency of users’ lives by communicating with other objects and elements in a system. The growth in these interconnected devices has been matched with increases in the use and aggregation of data collected by vendors or third parties. The number of hackers attempting to access users’ private information also has grown. Although attempts have been made to increase IoT security, the role users can play in protecting their information has been overlooked. We illustrate the necessity of taking a user-centered approach to privacy and security when designing and developing IoT technologies.

Many users unknowingly grant mobile applications (apps) permission to access their personal information (Felt et al., 2012). This access is in part a result of the large number of permissions apps request and users’ difficulty in understanding the nature of these potentially harmful requests (Kelley et al., 2011; Liccardi et al., 2014). Laboratory studies have suggested that different approaches can be taken to curtail the likelihood of mobile users installing malicious apps. A large body of work investigating mobile app security agrees that it is indeed possible to get users to make safer and more knowledgeable decisions during the app selection process. Gates, Chen, Li, and Proctor (2014), for example, found that users made less risky decisions when they were presented with a summary risk or safety ranking that conveys the overall risk of an app. Most recently, the effects of priming manipulations have indicated that introducing an intervention before the app selection process begins may be just as effective (Rajivan & Camp, 2016). In the current study we combined the work that has been conducted on providing overall risk/safety information (Chen et al., 2014; Choe et al., 2013) with that focused on priming users with self-relevant privacy questions (Rajivan & Camp, 2016). We sought to determine whether the subjective privacy priming effect reported by Rajivan and Camp could be replicated and whether an objective priming condition (in which facts about what information apps can access were presented) would have a similar or possibly even stronger effect. Another concern was how these priming conditions would interact with positively- vs, negatively-framed safety rankings (safety and risk scores, respectively). Participants were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk). Participants were presented with subjective or objective safety items before the app-selection task and with apps and their respective safety rankings during the selection process. Subjective priming was induced with the eight subjective items used by Rajivan and Camp (2016), whereas objective priming was by way of app-permission examples modified from Harbach, Hettig, Weber, and Smith (2014). In the control condition, participants completed the task without any priming material, similar to the study by Chen et al. (2015). Also, summary safety and risk rankings were varied for the app-selection task, as in Chen et al.’s (2015) study. The procedure closely followed that of Chen et al. (2015). Participants were provided with a demonstration of the elements of the apps they would be selecting. Each app was displayed with several pieces of information including the app icon, app name, developer, user rating (out of five stars), user rating count, permission safety or risk ranking (out of five circles), and a brief description of the app. The distributions of user ratings and permission safety/risk rankings were identical to those used by Chen et al. (2015). For the safety framing condition, a higher safety ranking indicated a safer app, whereas for the negative framing condition, a higher risk ranking indicated a riskier app. Participants were instructed to pick two out of the six apps for six groups of apps. We were able to replicate the findings of Chen et al. (2015), showing a greater impact from summary scores framed as safety rather than risk. The data suggest that participants were more sensitive to the safety rankings when higher rankings indicated low vs. high safety than low vs. high risk. We also replicated the findings of Rajivan and Camp (2016) in which subjective priming of security enhances participants’ consideration of the safety rankings. Moreover, we obtained evidence that objective priming with specific app permissions yields a similar benefit. Since priming with either kind of safety-relevant items resulted in safer app selections than a control condition without priming, we conclude that the benefit of priming is primarily due to the general activation of security and privacy as part of the task set. In sum, this study supports the notion that a multi-pronged approach where safety-related information is presented before the app selection process and a summary safety index is displayed may be the most effective way to improve users’ safety behaviors.

The current study measured driving performance using the Lane Change Test (LCT) and a Peripheral Detection Task (PDT), to determine if stimulus modality (visual and auditory) and stimulus eccentricity would affect performance on the PDT. The peripheral stimuli were either small white circles or broadband noise bursts located either 13o or 19o to the left or right of the center lane. Participants were instructed to respond with left or right key presses to the stimuli’s relative location while performing the LCT. The cognitive load of participants was also varied, either no load, low load or high load, produced by the n-back task (no n-back, 0-back, 1-or 2-back). The results indicate that higher cognitive load leads to poorer driving performance, increased reaction time of PDTs, and higher subjective workload. This study supports previous research indicating driving performance suffers in response to increased cognitive load due to cognitive or attentional tunneling.

The current Android app store requires users to search for information on the permissions requested by mobile apps. The present study sought to determine if safety priming, a manipulation shown to be effective in promoting safer app selections, would push users to look for safety-related information in the form of safety rankings when it was not readily available. We recruited participants from Amazon’s Mechanical Turk to complete an app selection task examining the effects of priming when a summary score was hidden by default, but could be shown if users selected to view it. Findings suggest that priming did not encourage users to seek out this information if it was not readily available. Further, it is concluded that safety priming is only effective if safety-related information is readily accessible. These results highlight the need to present all safety information as early as possible to ensure that it is taken into account.

The objective of this panel is to highlight past efforts that have successfully enhanced leadership of women in HFE, as well as brainstorm ideas for continuing this process in the future. In particular, this panel builds off the United Nations’ “HeForShe” movement, which addresses gender equality as a human rights issue in which everyone can take part. As part of this panel, we aim to provide cross-sectional strategies for fostering gender equality, as well as brainstorm future initiatives that take into account the continuing social shifts in gender perceptions. The panel will be co-chaired by Drs. Kimberly Stowers and Gabriella Hancock with assistance from Dr. Alexis Neigel, who will introduce the panel and its role in the HF/E Women’s Organization for Mentoring and Networking’s larger campaign to foster fair and inclusive professional development for future leaders. A variety of panelists from different genders, professional stages, and backgrounds will offer their unique perspective(s) on leadership and professional development. Members of the audience are encouraged to come prepared with questions to better learn the panelists’ thoughts, opinions, and strategies concerning what could and should be done to encourage women’s leadership in the future. Drs. Hancock and Stowers will foster discussion amongst the panelists, and invite questions and participation from the audience.
