Der Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts ist für die großen deutschen Medienkonzerne nach vielen Jahren stetigen Wachstums durch Erlösrückgänge und eine zunehmende Wettbewerbsintensität auf den klassischen Medienteilmärkten in Deutschland gekennzeichnet. Grund für die krisenhafte Entwicklung ist allem voran eine wachsende Diskrepanz zwischen der Nachfrage- und Angebotssituation auf den jeweiligen Rezipienten- und Werbemärkten. Die andauernde Wirtschaftskrise verstärkt die schwierige Lage noch zusätzlich. So gingen in der letzten Dekade die Werbeinvestitionen in Deutschland um über vier Milliarden Euro zurück, was einem Minus von 16 Prozent entspricht. Auf den Rezipientenmärkten von Zeitungen und Zeitschriften, aber auch bei Hörfunk und Fernsehen sind Sättigungstendenzen nicht mehr zu übersehen. Insbesondere die Entwicklung der Auflagenzahlen von Printprodukten folgt seit Jahren einem Abwärtstrend. Gleichzeitig wuchs im gleichen Zeitraum die Zahl der Medienangebote. Im Fernsehmarkt waren im Jahr 2009 mit 147 bundesweiten Privatfernseh- und Teleshoppingprogrammen fast dreimal so viele Programme empfangbar wie noch fünf Jahre zuvor. Und der Zeitschriftenmarkt in Deutschland ist einer der am dichtesten besetzten der Welt (FIPP 2010). Wachstum ist in diesen Märkten nur noch durch Verdrängung zu erreichen.
