Due to the importance of presurgical, noninvasive, and accurate diagnostic tools in mammary carcinoma characterization, this prospective secondary observational cohort study was designed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of B-mode, Doppler, contrast enhancement ultrasonography, or acoustic radiation force impulse-elastography in identifying mammary carcinomas types with high degree of malignancy. A total of 246 mammary carcinomas from 141 female dogs were analyzed using B-mode, Doppler, contrast enhancement ultrasonography, and acoustic radiation force impulse ultrasonography prior to their histopathological classification according to types (simple, complex, or special) and grade (I, II, or III). Qualitative and quantitative variables were compared between carcinoma types and grades by Fisher's or analysis of variance. Diagnostic performance was estimated by receiver-operating characteristic analysis, using histopathological classification as a reference. Deformability (acoustic radiation force impulse) had a diagnostic specificity of 100% and sensitivity of 12% in identifying special carcinomas. A width:length ratio greater than 0.53 can be suggestive of special carcinoma, with 80% sensitivity and 76% specificity. Contrast wash-in and peak enhancement times lower than 7.5 and 13.5 s, respectively, were indicative of complex carcinoma at 62% sensitivity and 60% specificity. Contrast wash-in, peak enhancement, and wash-out times greater than 6.5, 12.5, and 64.5 s, respectively; were indicative of grade II and III carcinoma at 68% sensitivity and 62% specificity. In conclusion, B-mode ultrasonography, contrast enhancement ultrasonography, and acoustic radiation force impulse-elastography enabled the identification of some of the characteristics of high-grade mammary carcinoma types and grades in female dogs with limited accuracy. The findings from this study may contribute to oncology research and clinical management canine patients.

This study aimed at evaluating the behaviour and understanding the diagnostic value of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in bitches with mammary carcinoma as a tool for monitoring and prognosis of canine cancer patients. Serum samples from 77 bitches were divided into four groups, G1 (n = 21), control group (healthy/neoplasia free bitches); G2 (n = 31), bitches with non‐metastatic mammary carcinoma less than 3 cm; G3 (n = 12), bitches with non‐metastatic mammary carcinoma greater than 3 cm; and, G4 (n = 13) bitches with mammary carcinoma and lymph node metastasis. The marker was dosed once in G1, whereas in G2, G3 and G4, CEA levels were determined before (M0) and 15 days after (M1) mastectomy, using the ELISA kit for humans while reading used ELISYS ONE human. A group of 11 bitches was followed up 45 days after mastectomy (M2). The results for the concentration of markers in blood serum samples at the evaluated times and their relationship with neoplasia biological behaviour and observed clinicopathological changes were evaluated by the Tukey test at 5% significance. The ROC curve was established to find the cut‐off value and calculate the test sensitivity and specificity, the multivariate matching analysis was performed to confirm the association between CEA values and clinicopathological variables. CEA values increased significantly in bitches with mammary carcinoma, metastatic tumours with a diameter larger than 3.0 cm and high grade, compared with healthy ones. In addition, mastectomy reduced the CEA concentration in the blood (P < .05) whereas high CEA levels were associated with unfavourable prognostic factors (P < .05). The biomarker presented good diagnostic value, especially for more aggressive tumours. In conclusion, CEA serum concentrations allowed to follow efficiently the evolution of mammary tumours in bitches, since CEA values increased in bitches with mammary gland tumour and decreased after mastectomy while correlating with prognostic factors such as tumour size, nodal metastasis and histological grade. Further studies are still needed to confirm its diagnostic value for follow‐up of relapse and early metastasis.

Less invasive protocols are necessary to study energy expenditure (EE) of cats living in homes for expressing their normal living conditions. The present study compared sampling times and the use of saliva, urine and blood to measure 2H and 18O to apply the doubly labelled water method. In the first study, four cats were used to evaluate the enrichment (2, 4, 6, 7 and 8 h) and elimination (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18 and 20 d) of 2H and 18O (subcutaneously injected). The maximum enrichment was after 5 h (R2 0·82) of injection, with an Ln linear elimination of both isotopes (P < 0·001; R2 0·99). The results of EE were similar, regardless of the sampling time used (P = 0·999). In the second study, seven male cats and seven female cats were used. Before and after isotope injection (5 h, 7 d, 10 d and 14 d), blood, saliva and urine were collected. Isotope enrichment was lower in urine (P < 0·05) and at the similar level in blood and saliva. Isotope elimination was similar for all fluids (P < 0·473). The EE calculated with blood and saliva was similar but higher for urine (P = 0·015). According to Bland–Altman statistics, blood and saliva presented low bias and high correlation (P < 0·001), but this was not observed for urine (P = 0·096). Higher EE was observed for male cats (384 (se 39) kJ/kg0·67 per d) than for female cats (337 (se 34) kJ/kg0·67 per d; P < 0·05). The sampling time for the method is flexible, and saliva can be used as a substitute for blood.

Although there are several studies addressing multicentric lymphoma in dogs, data regarding splenic lymphoma remains scarce. The diagnosis of splenic lymphoma using the World Health Organization (WHO) classification system can aid prognostic characterization of splenic lymphoma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the most common histological types of splenic lymphoma in dogs from Brazil according to the WHO classification. We assessed 33 cases of splenic lymphoma diagnosed by histopathologic and immunohistochemical (IHC) analysis submitted to VETPAT- Pathology Laboratory, Campinas-SP, Brazil. IHC was performed using antibodies against CD3 for T-cell and CD79α for B-cell identification . Mean age of patients with splenic lymphoma was 9.8 years. The most affected breeds were mixed breed dogs (33%) followed by Pit bulls and Yorkshires (9.0%). The most prevalent histological type was marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (60.7%) followed by diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (12.1%) and lymphoblastic T-cell lymphoma (12.1%). Histological and immunohistochemical characterization of splenic lymphoma is important due to the high prevalence of indolent lymphomas such as marginal zone, which may be less aggressive and thus have different prognostic and distinct forms of treatment when compared to high-grade lymphomas.

The immunophenotype is regarded as an independent prognostic factor in high-grade lymphomas, seeing that lymphomas of T-cell origin are associated with shorter survival time. Although a number of studies have evaluated the immunophenotypical profile of lymphoma in the USA and Europe, Brazilian research on the matter remains scarce. Exact characterization of the histopathological type is crucial to establish proper treatment and prognosis. This study evaluated the database of immunohistochemistry laboratories that perform immunophenotyping of canine lymphoma in Brazil. A total of 203 cases of multicentric lymphoma were classified according to the WHO classification. Immunophenotyping was able to identify 71.4% lymphomas of B-cell line, 27.1% of T-cell line and 1.5% of non-B cells and non-T cell lines. Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma was the most common with 59.1% of the cases. Among T-cell lymphomas, lymphoblastic was the most common (11.33% of the cases). Even though canine lymphomas tend to be high-grade, indolent lymphomas comprised 11.82% of the cases and T-zone lymphoma was the most prevalent (8.86%). The immunophenotype of multicentric lymphoma in Brazil is similar to those in other parts of the world, which suggests similar etiologic factors to the development of this disease.

Objetivou-se avaliar as condições sanitárias do rebanho leiteiro do município de Alegre, ES, quanto à ocorrência, principais agentes etiológicos, perfil de sensibilidade microbiana e os fatores que podem favorecer o aparecimento da mastite. Foi realizado exame macroscópico do leite em 399 animais de 20 propriedades do município de Alegre, ES, no período de julho de 2010 a julho de 2011, utilizando-se o Califórnia Mastitis Test (CMT) e posteriormente, cultura das amostras CMT positivas e antibiograma com 21 antimicrobianos.Realizou-se também, uma entrevista estruturada aos proprietários referente à produção de leite, sanidade dos animais, procedimentos de ordenha e assistência técnica. Non-cutaneous extramedullary plasmacytomas are relatively rare in dogs, affecting mainly the oral cavity and bowel loops. The involvement of the penile bulb has not been described, a fact of great importance for obstetric and veterinary oncology. The aim of this case report is to describe the occurrence of plasmacytoma in a dog's penile bulb, classified as a non-cutaneous extramedullary disease of rare location and unpublished casuistry. A non castrated dog of undefined breed, with seven years of age and weighing 15kg, presented clinical history of anorexia, vomiting, anuria and constipation. By specific examination of the external genitalia, a penile bulb mass was found in the preputial inspection, which was adhered to the encapsulated skin, extremely firm and rounded, measuring approximately 6 cm in diameter. By ultrasound evaluation of the structure in the penile bulb an increase of regional volume with heterogeneous echotexture and mixed echogenicity and tissue neovascularization upon color Doppler was observed. Incisional biopsy of the mass was performed and showed the presence of neoplasia of round cells. The characterization of the tumor was performed by immunohistochemistry and the neoplastic immuno cells were expressed CD79a and MUM1, indicating the diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma. Although the penile tumors in dogs are predominantly transmissible venereal tumors (TVT) and plasmocytomas are rare neoplasms in this location, this case report provides a novel occurrence of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the penile bulb of a dog, a condition not yet described in veterinary. ResumoObjetivou-se avaliar a soroprevalência da brucelose bovina e os fatores de risco associados no rebanho bovino do município de Alegre, Espírito Santo, no período de 2010 a 2012. Foram analisadas 516 amostras sanguíneas de bovinos com idade maior que 24 meses, de 26 propriedades rurais. O diagnóstico foi feito por meio do método indireto de diagnóstico e triagem, previsto oficialmente pelo Programa Nacional de Controle e Erradicação da Brucelose e Tuberculose (PNCEBT), Antígeno Acidificado Tamponado (AAT).Das 516 amostras testadas, 07 foram soros-reagentes, totalizando uma soroprevalência de 1,35%, presentes em 23,1% das propriedades.
