Resumo A igualdade de gênero é fundamental para um desenvolvimento econômico sustentável. O Brasil, apesar de ser uma das maiores economias do mundo, ainda precisa de um grande avanço no sentido de conquistar uma sociedade mais igualitária entre homens e mulheres quando comparado a países do mesmo porte econômico. O presente estudo faz uma análise da evolução da igualdade de gênero no Brasil entre 1997 e 2012, e quais os impactos da globalização, do desenvolvimento econômico e de medidas de bem-estar sobre a distribuição da igualdade de gênero entre os estados brasileiros. Para isso, foi utilizada a metodologia econométrica de dados em painel. Os resultados mostram que a igualdade de gênero aumentou no período e que, além disso, a globalização, mensurada com base no investimento direto estrangeiro e no acesso da população a aparelhos de televisão, elevou a igualdade entre os sexos no Brasil.
Em decorrência da inversão da pirâmide demográfica e a consequente queda das matrículas do ensino básico no Brasil, uma potencial medida de política pública é limitar o número de alunos por sala de aula. Nesse contexto, o objetivo principal deste estudo é avaliar o impacto de políticas que estipulem um número máximo de alunos por turma nas notas em Matemática e Português da Prova Brasil de alunos do 5 o ano municipal da cidade de São Paulo e 9 o estadual de todo o estado São Paulo. Para isso, empregou-se a metodologia de regressão descontínua fuzzy, utilizando o tamanho da sala predito pela função de Maimonides (Angrist e Lavy, 1999) como instrumento para o tamanho da sala observado. Os resultados mostram que não existam evidências estatisticamente significantes de que o tamanho da sala tenha impacto nas notas dos alunos. Visando trazer maior validade externa, o efeito de interesse foi estimado para o 5 o e 9 o ano estadual de Minas Gerais e Santa Catarina, e 5 o ano estadual de São Paulo, obtendo-se a mesma conclusão. As análises de robustez performadas também concluem não haver efeito. Palavras-chaves: tamanho da sala, notas de Português e Matemática, regressão descontínua fuzzy.
