Abstract-The purpose of the article is to disclose the challenges in sustaining the Malay traditional kuih with differing levels of acceptance among youth in East Coast Peninsular Malaysia. Malay kuih also known as Malay dessert that referring to a product which uses specific raw ingredients; methods; processes; techniques; materials and utensils; and the recipes have been passed down from one generation to other generations. It is part of Malaysian culture, identity and heritage that should be sustained by all generations especially youth. Throughout observation and interviews with youth, age of 18 to 25 years old who are completed their secondary school and basically come from different family backgrounds, the trend of buying pattern among youth towards Malay traditional kuih were influenced by the family, friends and occasions. Six main themes that have been identified are including family, value, knowledge, motivation, way of life and pecuniary. Although all themes were emphasized by youth during the interviews, a closer look revealed that the themes evaluated quite differently based on their age and background. The exhibited divergences are found to be underpinned by different way of life dispositions, which are extremely important and affecting in shaping and influencing values amongst the youth. The results are promising meaningful understanding of the challenges to sustain the Malay traditional kuih among youth, which are reinforced by its complex culture diversities and globalization.
Abstract-Traditional foods serve as representation of culture and tradition of a country and are passed from one generation to another. The cuisines are prepared using fresh ingredients containing beneficial nutrients which protect human body from food-related diseases. Unfortunately, in this modern environment, adolescents nowadays seem to consume less traditional food compared to their ancestors due to various factors. This study investigates the differences in terms of intention to eat traditional food between boys and girls in Malaysia. 655 samples were drawn from Selangor's secondary school students aged between 15 to 18 years old. Results showed that girls are more traditionally oriented as they chose traditional food as their meals compared to boys. Moreover, urban adolescents appear to have higher intention to eat traditional food compared to rural adolescents.Index Terms-Adolescents, intention to eat, Malaysia traditional food, urban and rural area.
This paper investigated the underlying variables that inspire Malaysian parents to save for their children's tertiary education. The main objective is to identify the main predictor variables influencing parents to save. Using the Theory of Planned Behaviour approach, the researchers investigated the magnitude of linear relationships of multiple exogenous variables with the endogenous variable of intention to save in SSPN [National Education Savings Scheme]. Finding of the research led to the factor of Parents' Aspiration to be the main predictor but mean score variances indicate small effect among other latent variables. Intention to save's mean scores indicated negative skewness but lack of knowledge to save the main encumbrance. Creating more awareness and dissemination of information to parents directly through schools would probably yield an increase intention towards SSPN contributions.
