This is an interpretative, critical, and selective review of scholarly contributions that explore Latin America’s religious landscape. We present data, both qualitative and quantitative, from Latin America and analyze the explanations given to make sense of it. After assessing the literature that uses either secularization theory or the “religious economy” approach, we study explanations that highlight a Latin American style of “popular religiosity.” These three models, in different ways, put the emphasis on religious institutions—their vitality, commands, competition, and authority. We propose, instead, a focus on the religious practices of regular believers. We speculate that embarking from that focus, the idea of an “enchanted modernity” will help make sense of Latin America’s religious landscape. Nuanced elucidation of Latin America’s religious particularities will situate them in dialogue with other regions of the world, like western Europe and the United States, while also acknowledging the fact that Latin America is experiencing a modernization process distinct from the North Atlantic one.
The aim of this study was to create an explanatory model that allows analyzing the predictive power of a set of variables related to political knowledge; more specifically, to analyze the relationship between the education level of young adults and the variables, interest in politics and internal political efficacy. We also analyzed the combined relationship between these variables, together with age, and political knowledge. We worked with a sample group of 280 young adults between the ages of 18-30 from the city of Córdoba (Argentina). The data was subjected to a structural equation modelling SEM analysis, which allowed for the corroboration of the following hypotheses: the higher the education level, the more the interest in politics; the higher the education level, the better the perception of internal political efficacy; the higher the education level, the more the political knowledge; the more the interest in politics, the more the political knowledge; and the better the perception of internal political efficacy, the more interest in politics. Moreover, the following hypotheses could not be verified: the older an individual, the more the political knowledge; and the better the perception of internal political efficacy, the more the political knowledge. The model obtained allows for discussion of the explanatory value of these socio-cognitive variables.
AbstractThis article explores visibility as a problem, an objective and a strategy of LGTB activism. Focusing on the recent appropriation of the Pride March as a political practice on the part of one sector of the LGTB Cordova movement, the author examines how activists dispute legitimate modes of articulating a visibility strategy. Marked by the risk of commercialization and an emptying of political content, the march nevertheless constitutes a stage for new and opposing definitions of the citizen status of sexual-gender diversity. Based on field observations and interviews with activists, the author interrogates how the trajectory in militancy, the sexualgender subjectivities at play, differential access to resources and the relatively radical character of their platforms constitute determining factors in the definition of the visibility strategy in 'festive' or 'combative' terms. Key words:LGTB movement, pride march, visibility strategies, historic militants, recent militants, queer theory, sexuality.
Palabras clave: ideología política, conservadurismo, progresismo, valores sociales, cultura política.ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between social values and political ideology among Córdoba's citizens. In order to achieve that goal, a quoted sample for socioeconomic level, age and sex of 373 18 to 65 year old citizens of Córdoba was taken. (2008), which is composed by 18 values grouped in six general orientations. The obtained information was submitted to a correlational indicate that different ideological positions relate differentially analyzed with the social values of the citizens of Córdoba. In addition, multiple regression analysis performed by the method of successive steps was carried out. Results show the specific contribution made by social values to the explanation of the different ideological positions.
