A estrutura familiar e nível socioeconómico podem tornar-se factores significativos para o desempenho escolar dos jovens, agindo indirectamente através das práticas educativas e oportunidades de opção por uma educação mais exigente. Tal é particularmente notório em países onde existem clivagens marcadas entre grupos sociais. O objectivo deste estudo é analisar as relações entre diferentes tipologias familiares de classe desfavorecida do Recife (Brasil) e o tipo de relação do pai e da mãe com os filhos em adolescentes que abandonaram a escola. Analisou-se o envolvimento dos pais (pai e mãe), segundo a percepção dos responsáveis escolares, no dia-a-dia da vida escolar de 504 alunos (entre os 15 e 17 anos) e sua relação com o abandono escolar dos filhos. Os resultados apontam que o pai (seja em famílias monoparentais, reconstruídas, ou de pai ausente), tende a apresentar um relacionamento de indiferença relativamente à vida escolar dos filhos. Esta atitude apresenta associações significativas com a estrutura familiar destes adolescentes que abandonaram os estudos. A atitude da mãe face à escola surge como calorosa/ apoiante (na maioria dos casos), apresentando também relações significativas com a estrutura da família. O abandono no ensino médio público (equivalente ao ensino secundário em Portugal) nas classes desfavorecidas brasileiras é um problema grave, de dimensões e repercussões preocupantes.

Neste trabalho, exploramos uma série de hipóteses específicas com o objetivo de entender a transmissão intergeracional de status social e educacional. A perspectiva geral proposta aqui é que este fenômeno resulta de um processo de socialização que é simultaneamente cognitivo e social. Crianças de NSE baixo e médio constroem mundos consensuais diferentes que dão às crianças de NSE médio razões para aprender e às crianças de classe baixa razões para não aprender na escola. As diferenças que antecipamos encontrar não estão nas crenças gerais sobre o valor da educação, mas nas suas representações específicas de estratificação social e educacional, sua identidade neste mundo social e os tipos de conhecimentos nos quais se considere valga a pena investir, em função da identidade.
