Aim:To understand the perceptions of users about the care provided to them and their newborns immediately after childbirth. Method: This is a descriptive study in which a qualitative approach was used, involving 20 postpartum women admitted to a secondary level Public Hospital of Fortaleza. Semi-structured interviews were carried out and were analyzed by means of Bardin's content analysis technique. Results: Three categories were highlighted: Care provided to newborns; care (or lack of care) provided to postpartum women; and structural failures of the maternity hospital. Discussion: Postpartum care was primarily focused on guidance on breastfeeding, without considering other demands of women, such as: the need for greater attention by the health team; more humane behavior of some health professionals; and guidance on self-care. Conclusion:Postpartum care is still limited and it requires greater attention and commitment from health professionals, as well as adjustments in the structural and organizational conditions of the maternity hospital so that it may provide decent and humane care.Descriptors: Postpartum Period; Rooming-in Care; Delivery of Health care. 228Rodrigues DP, Dodou HD, Lago PN, Mesquita NS, Melo LPT, Souza AAS. Objective: To understand the social representations of puerperal women regarding the contents of the educational practices carried out by nursing in the puerperium. Method: Descriptive and qualitative study, carried out from June to September 2014, in Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. Nineteen puerperal women were administered a semi-structured interview. The Theory of Social Representations was used as a theoretical reference. Lexical analysis was performed with ALCESTE (version 2012) software. Results: The contents of the representations on educational practice were associated to the nursing team's orientations, with emphasis on breastfeeding and nursing. A lack of educational action regarding self-care of the puerperal woman was also revealed. Final considerations: It is necessary to redirect educational practices in the puerperium, in order to cover the biopsychosocial needs of women in this period of life. The educational actions should be based on the problematizing model, with a stimulus for the autonomy of puerperal mothers and valorization of their social knowledge. The evidence demonstrates that the telephone is a viable technology for promoting breastfeeding, representing an alternative for the health units and health professionals that can contribute to mother-baby care.
Objective: To analyze the effects of an educational intervention via telephone on maternal breastfeeding self-efficacy. Method: Randomized controlled clinical trial including 240 puerperae from a secondary care hospital randomized into two groups: control and intervention. The educational intervention took place at seven, 30, 90, and 150 days postpartum and centered on self-efficacy and motivational interviewing principles. Self-efficacy was measured by the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale – Short Form. The data followed the abnormal distribution, so non-parametric tests were used. Results: The intervention group obtained higher median breastfeeding self-efficacy scores across the three outcome measures when compared to the control group (p < 0,001). Furthermore, the intervention group showed increased self-efficacy scores at all monitoring moments, which shows that the educational intervention was able to raise and maintain women’s confidence in breastfeeding their child over time. Conclusion: The use of a telephone-based intervention focused on self-efficacy principles and delivered by trained nurses effectively promoted maternal confidence in breastfeeding. Objectives: Check the reliability and validity of Breastfeeding SelfEfficacy Scale -Short Form (BSES-SF) in Brazilian adolecent puerperal mothers who have recently given birth; and evaluate the association of scores of the BSES-SF with the socioeconomic and obstetric variables of the studied population. Methods: Methodological and quantitative study developed in a public maternity in Fortaleza involving 79 adolescent puerperal mothers. The BSES-SF and a form with socioeconomic and obstetric variables were used. Data were analyzed using the SPSS program, considering the Cronbach's Alpha (α) as a measure of reliability, and Pearson's correlation, with significance of 5%. Results:The BSES-SF is a reliable and valid measure (α = 0.807). The teenagers proved to be confident about the practice of breastfeeding (56.15 points). Only education level showed significant association with maternal self-efficacy of adolescents in breastfeeding (p = 0.032). Conclusion:The BSES-SF is a safe and effective tool in the detection of self-efficacy of adolescent mothers in breastfeeding, favoring their assistance in the process of breastfeeding and, hence, the reduction of early weaning.
