1900 erschien in Milwaukee eine von Edward Kremers in Madison besorgte englische Bearbeitung unter dem Titel "The volatile oils" unter denselben Auspizien. L,s kann dem Naturmenschen, der jedenfalls Alles, was ihm auffiel, dem Kinde gleich unbewußt auch zum Munde führte, um es zu untersuchen, nicht entgangen sein, daß manche Pflanzen und Pflanzenteile sich durch bittern oder säuerlichen, andre durch einen auffällig kühlenden Ge¬ schmack auszeichneten, und letzte Eigenschaft, noch mehr ein kaum je fehlender Begleitumstand, ein nachhaltiger Duft mußte dem wohl empfind¬ lichsten Sinnesorgan, der Nase, aufgefallen sein, ja sie mag in solchen Fällen den Menschen erst auf die Spur solcher Gewächse geführt haben. 1) Unbewußter Trieb leitete ihn sicher dazu, solche duftende Pflanzenteile, gleich dem Salz, zu Würzzwecken seiner urwüchsigen Nahrung zuzu¬ setzen und später zu Arzneizwecken zu benutzen. Das Hantieren mit ihnen mußte lehren, daß die riechenden Teile beim Reiben sich den Händen mitteilten und an ihnen haften blieben, daß sie in gewissen Teilen vorwiegend vorhanden waren, beim Zerbrechen oder Zerreiben aus den Schalen citronenähnlicher Früchte z. B. herausspritzten oder hervortropften, daß sie in wäßrige Auszüge übergingen, daß, wenn diese Ruchstoffe erhitzt wurden, sie sich verflüchtigten, in Dampfform aufwärtsstiegen, und daß sie das ebenfalls taten, daß sie sich den Dämpfen mitteilten, wenn wäßrige Pflanzenauszüge zum Verdampfen gebracht wurden. Die urwüchsige Hütte, die sich über dem Herde, dem Wahrzeichen, dem Mittel-und Kernpunkt der Wohnstätte erhob, gab dem Menschen, richtiger der Frau, der das Walten am Herdfeuer, das Priesterturn des Herdes zufiel und in übertragener und erweiterter Bedeutung noch zufällt, vollauf Gelegenheit, die tappenden allerersten, dann zielbewußt weitere Ver¬ suche auf dem Gebiete der Naturlehre, der Küchenchemie, der Grund¬ lage unsrer Chemie anzustellen. Stand der Strouletirke wiihrend ekes Experiments. Dieses ist offenbar nicht vie1 mehr als die Halfte von dem, +as vier Elektroden leisten wurden. Ein anderer Ubdstand bei diem Anordnung war, daO der Kryolith ner an den Anoden flussig wurde und sich allmahlich is den Ecken.sammelte und dort feat wurde. Augenscheinlich muO die Anode gleichmX3iger iiber die Oberfliiche der Kathode verteilt werden, so daB sich der schmelzende Kryolith in allen Teilen des Tiegels halten kann. Sobald die Leiter eine etwas groBere Quereohnittsflbhe besitzen, werden sie yon der Anode vollgefullt, wie dieses obenstehende Figur zeigt. Die Elektrode beateht aus vier Graphitplatten, nelche 1,9 om dick sind, und deren Gesamthohe und-breite je 1 2 3 cm betriigt. Die Kathode besteht aus einem GefS3 von viereckigem Querschnitt, deren Seitenwiinde 17,8 cm breit sind, und die aus Graphitplatten von derselben Stiirke angefertigt wurden. Man hat sich bei geschichtlichen Betrachtungen stets darauf beschrankt, im Grunde beschranken miissen, in den Werken romischer, griechischer, weiter zuriick vielleicht noch agyptischer und assyrischer Schriftsteller nach Vorlaufern Umschau zu halten. Ob nicht auf germanischem Boden, im europaischen Norden, ob nicht im Nordosten, bei slawischen Volkern etwa, was hier zuerst in Betracht kame, gewisse noch geiibte chemisch-techische Arbeiten bekannt und im Schwange gewesen sind, clas iiberhmpt nur in Betracht zu ziehen, fie1 wohl kaum jemand ein. Etwaigen Spuren nachzuforschen, wa,re auch vergebliche Liebesmiihe gewesen. Uberlieferungen kennt man kaum. Da der Mensch aber allerwegen derselbe ist, da er von denselben Begierden geleitet' und beherrscht wird, fiir die Befriedigiing seiner Lebensbedingnngen auf uberall die gleichen Wege gezmungen ist, da er von denselben Instinkten auf die Spur der notiqen Nahrungs-, GenuB-und Heilstoffe gefiihrt wird, darf inan ohne weiteres annehmen, daB er auch in bezug auf ihre Zubereitung zu Nahrungs-, GenuB-und Heilmitteln zum inindesten recht ahnliche Wege gegangen sein wird. Der natiirliche Drang nach R,auschmitteln lehrte ihn, iiberall niit demselben Endergebnis, Alkohol aus den jeweilig vorhandenen Pflanzen-oder Tierstoffen, aus (Wein-) Beeren, (Dattel-) Friichten, aus Honig und Milch, auf Grund von deren Gehalt an Zucker durch Vergiiren darzustellen. Eine hohere; Stufe der Einsicht und Kunstfertigkeit lehrte ebenso, wie aus den Andeutungen bei A r i s t o t, e 1 e s , P 1 i n i u s usw.meines Erachtens ohne jeden Zweifel hervorgeht, aus diesen alkoholhaltigen Garrauschstoffen den maBgebenden Stoff, den Alkohol, selbst darzuutellen. DaB er nicht genannt oder nur angedeutet wird, daB wir seinen (vielleicht Deck-) Namen noch nicht gefunden haben, kann, darf nicht a h ausschlaqgebend angesehen werden, urn ihn und seine Darstellung leugnen. Vor noch gar nicht langer Zeit geschah auf dem Gebiete chemischer Technik (geradezu des chemischen Handwerks) gar manches, von dem der wissenschaftliche Chemiker keine Ahnung hatte. Selbst Firmen wie S c h i m m e 1 & C 0. usw., die in so freigebiger Art von clen reichen Schatzen ihrer Wissenschaft ailer Welt abgeben, werden, ganz, berechtigt wohlweislich Manches.
